Thomas cook is more than a travel agent, it arranges holidays package tours. That is where the 150k are.
Also Thomas cook is primarily and English package tour operator, not all of Europe.

Scotland was wonderful. Very friendly people. Everywhere we went people talked to us. Ireland is on my list too. Next year we’re going to Italy and then the following year probably Ireland.

Why the drama? Swipe a credit card, get a room and get a flight. How many of these 150,000 really need govt assistance to travel home?
And a lot of these people may not have the money to do that. They prepaid the travel agency for their trip. The travel agency arranged the travel/stay, and likely had a planned payment at a later date. BUT, now that they went bankrupt, the hotels/airlines are telling the travelers that they have to pay it themselves, direct to the hotel. But since they already prepaid the travel company, they may not have another several hundred / thousands to pay twice to finish their trip.

These days credit is easy to come by. If youre engaged in international travel without the ability to wave a credit card and get home, you should not be traveling. I suspect the fraction of that 150,000 unable to is very small, nothing like Dunkirk.
