Further, what is goal of event, why host there, why then? This has all of the earmarkings of a low-turnout, embarrassing event that will be noted by the news media for those reasons.

Someone started a gun-rights Meetup in New York City a couple of weeks ago and immediately asked everyone for a statement, before they even had a meeting time or a meeting place. I gave one, but I never heard from them again.
Someone at the Trump group said they investigated the guy and he lived in Kansas. So how was he going to lead a group in NYC?
Sometimes you can use charlatans for your own purposes, and of course he may be legit, just not very competent perhaps.
