[One of Syrias strengths is it is Secular Syria. Asma Assad is a Sunni Muslim, married to an Alawite.]
A secular Sunni Arab is a contradiction in terms. Sunni Arabs are secular in the sense of using Western technology. In that respect, Osama bin Laden was a secularist. In reality, only atheists with Sunni Arab parents are secular in *any* Western sense of the word. I’m gonna bet she is now an Alawite and her kids are being brought up Alawite, in stark opposition to Sunni Arab dogma.

“Syria” isn’t secular. No Sunni Muslim is, let alone a country with an overwhelming Sunni majority. Malaysia, a country with a slight majority of Sunnis, run by Sunnis, isn’t secular. The Alawites have imposed secularism over the Sunni majority. The moment that majority gains power, and a legitimate (i.e. representing the majority) government comes into place, Syria will stop being secular.
