Classic Costner:

Open Range

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316356/

In Montana in 1882, "Boss" Spearman [Robert Duvall in another classic Western turn] is an open range cattleman, who, with hired hands Charley, Mose, and Button, is driving a herd cross country. Charley Postelwaite [Costner] is a former soldier who fought in the Civil War and feels guilty over his past as a killer.

Charley "gets over it" when confronted by a more ruthless hired gunthug and his thug rancher boss. As you can see in the clip, he uses the Nathan Bedford Forrest method.
