Andrew Yang is widely identified as a “hi tech entrepreneur,” leading many people (including me) to assume that he is worth many millions of dollars, and independently wealthy. That made sense considering his plan to give a thousand bucks a month (borrowed, of course) to everyone (and it’s not clear to me if legal or illegal aliens qualify).
But according to information in this column by James Freeman in the Wall Street Journal, he isn’t more than middle class, at least by the standards of Silicon Valley.
Julie Bykowicz reported in the Journal in May:
Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, a self-described tech entrepreneur and philanthropist, earned about $150,000 last year, according to his newly released personal financial disclosure form.
The form shows the 44-year-old’s earnings last year came mostly from speaking engagements, including at the investment bank JPMorgan Chase & Co., and that he has assets worth between about $834,000 and $2.4 million, mostly tied to a Hudson Valley property.
Forbes magazine pegs his net worth at just $1 million. This estimate represents significantly more wealth than the average American enjoys. But if voters are inclined to select him based on his career in the tech industry, they should know that if he wanted to own property in the heart of Silicon Valley instead of the Hudson Valley, he might struggle to find a home he could afford.
Now, Yang has not made any claims to greater wealth than that, but I would wager that most people assumed that his success as a tech entrepreneur was on a much larger scale.
I have nothing against him for being not among the super-rich. But it looks like he has leveraged very modest success and an engaging personality into a major presence

This is why I don’t like using the word entrepreneur anymore. It has become cringworthy with dopes like this that use it and don’t do any entrepreneuring.
The Presidential run is a transparent attempt to build his rep so as to up his future speaking fees and “fill the pipeline” with engagements. Appears to be working nicely.
Huh. I’m quite a lot richer than he is.
“Im quite a lot richer than he is.”
SWEET! How soon can all FReepers expect their $1,000 checks?
Middle class house in Campbell or West San Jose now runs between 1.3 - 1.8 million.
They sold in the 90’s for about 300K - 400K.
Last time NorCal was affordable was 1975.
So, Andrew Yang’s yearly income is $150,000 a year. What can he afford in Silicon Valley assuming he wants to take a mortgage?
Is this his house in NY? That's ok, getting into politics will make him filthy rich even if he doesn't win any office. He could then hire an illegal to weed his lawn.
I’d sell him mine for $!,000,000.00.
A garage or a lovely storage room in South San Jose
Here’s a charming property.

Nice condo, only 825K.
He can afford half that (~ 3*150k).
So if he had a wife making same, and a little equity from a previous hovel maybe, he could get into the condo.
Unfortunately condo’s don’t go up as fast as SFD’s so he’s basically gonna be stuck there until maybe his own income goes up.
Note this condo sold in 1997 for $232K.
Sorry, I am much less generous than Yang.
A bit of a Scrooge really.
Actually, I like the idea of a politician who would actually have to live on their salary. President Trump is exceptional in many ways, but really I have no issue with someone of either party having to actually worry about a personal budget like a normal person.
He will after cashing in his coffers.
So I have more net worth than Yang and also make more than Yang annually.
Not to sound elitist but why should I listen to him?
You probably make more than Harry Truman did in the 1940’s.
RE: Sorry, I am much less generous than Yang.
Yang is generous ... WITH OTHER PEOPLE’s MONEY.
Harry Truman had some accomplishments as well as held political office prior to the Presidency. What has Yang done except giving speeches?
