Why Greeks question this role model's credentials

She has won awards and accolades, and has been feted internationally for her scientific work, but now a woman hailed as one of Greece's youngest and brightest minds has come under more intense scrutiny than ever before.

The rise and possible fall of Eleni Antoniadou, 31, has become the subject of intense discussion among Greeks.

For years she has been giving interviews portraying herself as a researcher working for Nasa; an expert on regenerative medicine; a maker of cutting-edge artificial organs; a passionate activist against organ trafficking; and a trainer of astronauts.

But it seems that not a single Greek news outlet, out of dozens that have interviewed her, ever bothered to check if everything that had been attributed to her was entirely accurate.

The tipping point came earlier this month when Greek Education Minister Niki Kerameus handed Ms Antoniadou an award at a privately organised event for her contribution to science. The minister later posted a photo on her Facebook account and borrowed a quote from Antoniadou: "You can become whatever you are dreaming of."

This provoked a response from a number of Greek scientists, who spend most of their days carrying out lab research and have little time or inclination for publicity.

A Greek professor who teaches at a French university decided to do a detailed search online to see how it was possible for such a young person to have accomplished quite so much.

When he posted his findings on social media, there was outrage among the academic community. Others followed suit, including Greek Hoaxes, a group dedicated to uncovering fake news.

Greek Hoaxes accused Ms Antoniadou of misrepresenting her achievements and hit back with a series of counterclaims.

I think this story sums up "accomplishments" hyped in the "news" today. Especially in science, when the recipient ticks off p.c. boxes I often question the "accoplishments".

Good for the Greeks, they see a hoax, they call it a hoax.

Unfortunately when our left gets caught in a hoax, which is daily, they double down on the hoax and attack the accuser.

Fake news, glowbull warming, excess racism, The Russians, Kavanaugh’s sexual exploits and Trump stole the election are just a few examples of what we get hit with daily.

The propaganda is so bad Joseph Goebbels had to crawl under a red hot coal in Hell so no one would see him and laugh at his childs play.

So it seems that one agency or journalist is copying the other without ascertaining whether all that is said has any real basis. On the other hand we have close to 40,000 Ph.D. Greeks, many of whom have significant numbers of work, are internationally renowned scientists, some within NASA, who spend decades in the labs and are completely ignored.

It should be noted here that Ms. Antoniadou recently accepted a Teaching Leader Award organized by RDC Informatics next to people who have dedicated their careers to education. Teachers from public and private schools were awarded for their performance, dedication and innovation in the media. Among other things, MIT Professor Konstantinos Daskalakis, whose important research and academic career is unquestionable.
So given that Ms Antoniadou does not seem to have taught at any educational institution, it is interesting that she received such an award.

Yet another case of dim-bulb “journalists” getting taken in by a photogenic member of a protected class because her story sounds cool.

Elizabeth Holmes might sympathize, but she has other things to worry about at the moment.

She should get a reward for having the most rewards, either legally or illegally earned.

Role model - business and personal?

I don’t believe in role models, but I find Elizabeth Holmes and Peter Diamandis very fascinating entrepreneurs. I believe that their intellect, their entrepreneurial spirit and most importantly their vision to bring disruptive technologies to life will transform our world.

I really don’t know who these people are. It seems that there was a question concerning the woman’s credentials and her supposed quick rise to acclaim. It’s usually the case that to rise you make incredible discoveries and publish a lot. I don’t know if she had done this or if she padded her resume. Again, I don’t know her but there seems to be questions surrounding her.
