Trump: Gun legislation negotiations moving 'very slowly'

President Trump said in an interview broadcast early Thursday that bipartisan gun reform legislation is moving "very slowly," partly due to Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke's comments supporting mandatory buybacks for assault-style weapons.

The president told "Fox & Friends" that his administration is doing "a very careful job" when considering legislation and compromises between both parties.

"We're not moving on anything," he said. "We're moving very slowly in one way because we want to make sure it's right."

Trump added that O'Rourke's comments at last week's Democratic presidential debate are "part of the problem," adding they are making other lawmakers on both sides nervous.

"Part of the problem that we have is because Beto O'Rourke's statement about taking away guns," he said. "All of the moderate Republications and some Democrats are now afraid to do anything to go down that slippery slope."

O'Rourke, a former Texas congressman, asserted during the debate that he planned mandatory buybacks for assault-style rifles if elected president. "Hell yes we are going to take your AR-15, your AK-47," he said.

Trump during the Fox News interview also described himself as a "very strong supporter of the Second Amendment" and said he does not plan on taking away guns from law-abiding citizens. He added he was willing to stand up against the National Rifle Association and the Republican Party to take action.

The Bold, Underlined text: This better be rhetoric from President Trump.

If not, then he is going to dismiss his base, thus likely losing 2020.

This could be Trump’s intended exit strategy, back into private life.

You’re negotiating your presidency, Mr. Trump, and nothing else.

Trump is just slow walking this until the libtards in the media get the next shiny object. Then he can quietly forget about it. They all do it and they do it all the time. Notice how Barr isn’t even giving any excuses any more? We’re not even being told 4 to 6 weeks anymore. I have to admit I hated being told 4 to 6 weeks when I knew Barr was blowing smoke up my butt but now he has quit I HAVE TO ADMIT I SORT OF LIKED IT.

ANY gun control no matter how reasonable it sounds and President Trump will not have a second term. This is a 100% certainty.

Um, maybe it’s just me but any negotiations (although there shouldn’t be ANY) would be from a position of WE are right and they are wrong instead of knuckling under to their demands for more infringement. Know what I’m saying? We should(our reps) be on the offensive not the defensive side of this NON issue. Infringed means exactly what it means. This ain’t an ‘is, is’ question.

When you think about it the entire Trump Presidency has been libtards trying to lay traps in front of him endlessly.

translation: They’ll drag on for a few more months, by which time everyone will have forgotten why they began in the first place.

Brilliant.

When Ed Henry asks if Trump is willing to stand up to whoever is he supposed to answer that he is not willing to stand up, no I am afraid? Come on now. You how Trump works.

“Trump is just slow walking this until the libtards in the media get the next shiny object.”.

Wishful thinking but I don’t think thats the case. He is receiving some very very bad advice somewhere. Anyone telling him he has room for gun control needs to be walked out of the building.

I have made the case for the reality that he is already down a minimum of half a million votes due to the bumpstock ban. Personally I have reason to believe the number is actually much greater and the damage far more extensive. That being said the bumstock ban alone will lose the election for him if its close so there is absolutely no room for more. In fact he needs to start talking about repealing gun laws such as the Hughes amendment. When you compromise both parties get something in return. What do Trump 2nd amendment supporters get?

Fair point.

bipartisan gun reform legislation is moving "very slowly,"

I certainly want that motion to stall out and end.

I remember the strategy that President Trump used for the DACA negotiations, which was to appear supportive, then add demands which the Democrats were certain to reject.

Perhaps a similar path is being followed with the "gun reform" proposals. I hope that is the case.

I would like to see demands to repeal the GCA and NFA laws in their entirety for a starting position, followed by Uniform CCW Reciprocity requirements for all States, similar to what we now have for driver licenses.

Who says the Overton window can only move to the left?

All I need to read is right here. Trump would have JAMMED IT DOWN OUR THROATS until Irish Bob O'Rourke spoiled the mood.

Dear Lord, I pray that’s all that’s happening. I’m OK with him running out the clock on the media’s attention to this.
