I've worked in three nursing homes. Joe is typical of what I've seen as the brain begins to deteriorate. It becomes like a movie projector running scenes of life out of sync and time. It's sad.

I was discussing this with my wife yesterday.

Joe’s mind is telling him he is back in the 1950s...

If he starts telling his audience to “duck and cover” then he is done. ;-)

You are spot on, I watched my grandmother’s early dementia progress to full on bed ridden Alzheimer’s over about 15 years. After watching slow Joe during the first debate it was obvious to me, he is probably about four years into it. He is in the denial stage, he knows something is wrong but everyone is against him. The next stage is losing the ability to manage daily life things like finances, appointments and personal hygiene.
