There were two honest journalists who reported the mass murder in the Ukraine, Gareth Jones and Malcolm Muggeridge. Muggeridge was a reporter for the left-wing newspaper The Guardian and got fired for reporting the truth. Jones was subsequently murdered in Mongolia possibly by Soviet agents.

I am at the moment re-reading Robert Conquest’s “The Harvest of Sorrow” one of the major works on the Holodomor.

Gareth Jones .. became a "marked man," due to his outspoken and fearless exposés of Soviet atrocities, corruption, and failures. In 1935, he was kidnapped and murdered in Mongolia. Although authorities claimed his death was the work of bandits, evidence showed the deed was actually an assassination, carried out by the NKVD, forerunner of the KGB.
