Trump official says asylum changes will drive down backlog

WASHINGTON (AP) — A top Trump administration immigration official defended the effort to effectively end asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border for nearly all migrants, saying Friday it was necessary to drive down a massive backlog of immigration cases....

Juan Carlos Perla, 36, said Friday that many asylum seekers from his native El Salvador have returned, including cousins who have stayed with him in a rented two-room house with donated furniture on the distant outskirts of Tijuana.

“People know that they aren’t going to be allowed in. They’re desperate. Many don’t like it here. Life here isn’t easy,” he said....

It is perhaps the biggest change to U.S. asylum policy since it was established in 1980 and the most consequential move of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration, a signature issue as he heads into a re-election campaign....

The sense of despair was evident at a recent immigration hearing in San Diego, where only five people showed up on a docket of more than 40 cases.

The first asylum seeker under the “Remain in Mexico” policy, a Honduran man who crossed the border in late January and spoke to The Associated Press last month on condition of anonymity out of fears for his personal safety, said he often saw other Central Americans toss their court documents in the garbage in Tijuana, certain they would never get asylum.

One of the effects of this could be THOUSANDS of Central Americans returning home and saying to their neighbors, ‘don’t even try to go to America’

Let the drug gangs have at them.

They already paid them for transit to the US. They are paying criminals roughly $4,000 to commit another set of crimes themselves.

Let them hang from lights like the others when ransoms aren’t paid.

What’s to “defend”? This is what’s right.

I can see where that could dampen incentive for others getting involved in such an enterprise in the future. No willing participants, no invasion.

The asylum deal with Mexico will change absolutely nothing.

90% of asylum claims are bogus and are rejected - half the people who claim it never even show up in court.

People make asylum claims for one reason only - they can legally apply for welfare benefits and work permits while their case works through the courts - often for years!

These same people are still going to sneak across the border - but, next time, they won’t apply for asylum.

Unless they have outstanding criminal warrants, or they are caught with drugs or guns, all of them will get “Catch and Release” within one or two weeks anyway.

WOW! This President is "Taking care of Business". Just with the threat of tariffs, Mexico succumbed and even put troops on their southern border. When's the last time you heard of a new migrant caravan? Plus, the People's Wall is getting built.

As a long time anti-illegal alien advocate, I am extremely optimistic.

"The asylum deal with Mexico will change absolutely nothing."

Guess you missed the deal Pres. Trump made with Mexico to keep them there while awaiting their hearings.

Re: “Guess you missed the deal Pres. Trump made with Mexico to keep them there while awaiting their hearings.”

And, I guess you did not read my Comment?

NO ONE is going to apply for asylum if they will be kept in or sent back to Mexico.

When immigrants who have not applied for asylum get caught at the Border, at least 80% will get “Catch and Release” into the USA after a week a two.
