Putin hopes elected PM will preserve Russian-Israeli relations

Russian President Vladimir Putin told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Thursday that he hopes whoever is elected in the upcoming elections will maintain the good relations between the two countries.

"I remember the September 17th elections and hope who ever gets in the Knesset will preserve the friendship between our countries and strengthens our relations in the future," said Putin.

Putin also mentioned Russia's commitment to the large Russian-speaking community in Israel, saying "over 1.5 million immigrants from the Soviet Union live in Israel. We always considered them our people, compatriots".

The Russian president had also asked Netanyahu to tell President Reuven Rivlin that he would be happy to accept Rivlin's invitation to visit Israel to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and said that if possible, he would like to inaugurate a memorial for the civilians of Leningrad who fought during the Nazi siege while on that visit.

Netanyahu also commented on the good relations between the two countries, while mentioning Israel's Russian-speaking population.

But Putins alliance with Syria and Iran in building up a hostile military alliance on Israel’s border does not seem to bother him. I can see his point, if you are planning to invade your neighbor and kill him to loot his wealth it is best that you remain friends until you stick the knife in his back.

International relations are a little bit more complicated than that.

Indeed it is, but Putin playing nice guy while setting up a invasion is pretty simple. You can pile lots of things on top, but that is the foundation.

Why to protect Syria is Putin allowing Iran to build up logistics bases in Syria? If Iran is not fighting alongside Russia, why are they being allowed to built military installations there?

A rival Islamic faction building bases inside another’s territory needs a real reason.

Vacation destination?

Do some research. The situation is very much discussed in Russian media.

The main Russian objective in Syria is not to allow it to descend into a failed terrorist ruled state.

That is needed for economic and security reasons because Syria is indeed very close to Russia geographically.

Iran is neither Russian ally nor Russia is happy with its growing influence in Syria for the very reason Israel isn’t but Iran is generally against the very same terrorists turning Syria into a failed state.

Iran-influenced Syria is not a great outcome but it is somehow orderly and pose a lesser threat to the Russian interests than ISIS controlled Syria. I believe you understand why. Iranians indeed do a lot of work on the ground to fight terrorists except Hamas and Hizbollah. These groups aren’t against the legal Syrian government or Russia and for that reason Assad and Putin might afford to tolerate them for now.

That is good enough result for the money. If Russians want an ideal result they’d need to move 200k troops there to displace Iranians but that is too high a cost.

Iran IS the biggest terrorist ruled State. I am sure Russian media is a great source of justification for the ruling Russian class, it always has been. But sponsoring forward bases for Irans threat to "Wipe israel from the face of the earth" because Russia is too weak to handle the remains of the rebels alone is an incredibly thin excuse.

The majority (80%) of Syria is Sunni Muslims, Iran is shia. Moving in Hezbollah, (Iran), is not at all about pacifying the region. It is about CREATING conflict. Only 12% of Syria is shia. Sunni vs Shiite is the PRIMARY internal violent conflict in the Muslim world.

Putin needs Hezbollah and the Irainian guard cause Russia is too weak my ass... Russia has a primary goal of creating a powerful coalition of fundamentalist Jihadi for conquest. And Israel is in the cross hairs.

One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.
Iran didn’t cause any troubles for Russia since earlier 1800s.
All terrorists threatening Russia are Sunni. Al-Qaeda is Sunni. ISIS are Sunni.
Iranians didn’t blew Twin Towers. Sunni terrorists did it.
Iranians didn’t kill Chris Stevens. Sunni terrorists did it.
99% of all terrorists are Sunni.
Iran is a state actor and somehow semi-responsible and you can talk and make a deal with them.
Also Iran is a mortal enemy of Sunni terrorists.
It is that simple.

So if 80% of the country is Suni, then it’s a Russian /Iranian invasion to expand the Shitte empire, or Caliphate from the Iranian perspective.

Being how Iran is exporting arms world wide and stirring up war all across the middle east, I find it difficult to swallow the its for peace” line that is the subject of this thread.

Being that Russia built the three different types of nuclear reactors needed to create hydrogen bombs for Iran “for power generation” because they are such an energy poor country... I somehow suspect they also helped them to develop the nuclear warheads.

Very peaceful, no alternative motives here, move on folks.

Russia and Iran have been evil twins plotting for decades. I really believe it will not work out well for them in the end.

I get your point about Syria but don’t you find it a little schizophrenic in principle? How do you imagine a Sunni-run Syria? There are a number of examples of minority-ruled countries. Take South Africa for example and applying to Syria imagine minority are Shia and majority are Sunni.
I guess old South Africa was a more stable society. That you want for Syria is a new South Africa and exact it to be a good neighbor for Israel?

One thing for sure. There wouldn’t be that strong Iranian and Hizbollah presence if not for the central government weakened by foreign sponsored Sunni terrorists.
