I used to carry multiple types of potentially lethal tools and such in my carry-on on the way to jobs and other destinations. (No firearms, though.) Never once was checked (physically inspected) until I flew overseas, to the Philippines (at that end).
After 9/11, when flying stateside, I had my cuticle scissors confiscated at check in.
