And there are theories that some of the English colonists from Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke Colony may have intermarried with the Lumbee after they abandoned Roanoke.

I’ve read numerous books on the “Lost Colony” and that theory is explained in detail. As Zhang Fei said, many in the tribe are not interested in DNA testing.

What’s amusing is that John Ross of Trail of Tears fame was only 1/8 Indian. Not a fake Indian like Pocahontas but, without the tribal getup, about as Indian-looking as Keanu Reeves:

I had been told that the Lumbee had a history of taking in escaped slaves and other fugitives, so there was intermarriage going way back.
