“CNN finally, and begrudgingly, called it for Bishop. They staved off the inevitable until Bishop started giving his speech.”
EXACTLY the way CNN was forced to call it for Trump in 2016 ... CNN was going on and on and on and not calling Pennsylvania, and then Trump went on stage to give his victory speech anyway, and then CNN suddenly called Pennsylvania for Trump ....
There was a lot of drama going on that night. Remember when Hillary refused to do a concession speech? She sent John Podesta to the stage to "shoo" everybody home for the night. "We'll have something to say tomorrow" he said.
I believe that might have been a gambit to prevent Trump from giving a victory speech. But soon as Trump announced he was speaking anyways, that's when Hillary finally threw in the towel and conceded to Trump in a phone call.
But I'm thinking if Trump didn't give a victory speech that night and "claimed the throne" so to speak, there would have been some Al Gore level shenanigans in place by sunrise to steal the election.
