Campaign says new gun control measures may pose political problem for Trump: Sources

As President Donald Trump has mulled acting on gun control legislation in the wake of a string of mass shootings, data gathered by the president's campaign showed that supporting any gun control measures would pose a problem for him politically going into the 2020 election season, according to sources familiar with the results.

The data is comprised of campaign polling conducted before recent back-to-back mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, that left 31 dead -- as well as more recent outreach to his base and independent voters, according to the sources. ABC News has not independently reviewed the data. The sources said it's likely to inform Trump's decision on whether to act on any gun control legislation, despite separate nationwide polling showing widespread public support for tougher gun sale background checks.

The White House requested data from the campaign on how Trump's base and independent voters would react if Trump were to support gun control measures late last month, after the Dayton and El Paso shootings, the sources told ABC News. On Aug. 31, seven more were killed in Texas in a shooting rampage in Odessa.

I don’t think Trump is going to take any anti-Second Amendment measures. Even Trump occasionally has to act “presidential” and make the proper clucking noises after a mass shooting.

The Left has been winning all these years because they accept taking some ground then a little more each time and the Right says “Well we didn’t really give up everything.”
Just a waiting period, gun free zones and no bump stocks. Could have been worse.

Pakistan whined “Just give us Bangladesh and we will use that land for us Muslims and never again ask for more.” Then took it and later demanded more from India. And set fire to buses, burning alive the Indians in them.

Like Chamberlain giving ground to Hitler and then seeing more taken later. Guess he couldn’t be trusted.

Once the Dems get all the names and addresses of all gun owners through background checks, they will know where to send the 6 foot 7 inch armored SWAT guys at 3 am to take them. Neighbor said they heard him listening to Rush and Mark Levin through an open window at home. Caught a potential school shooter just in time./s

And will soon get ALL the banks and credit card companies to prohibit mortgages, retail purchases and other transactions for gun owners not voluntarilly turning in all guns as in New Zealand.

Unsealing criminal data on minors, death penalty for mass shootings and FBI reporting background failures to local authorities looks fine with me.... especially the gang-banger minors that are committing all the frickin’ crimes.

The problem is, what he says is providing support for those who are screaming about gun control. There is absolutely no argument about the futility of what the democrats (and a few Republicans) are proposing except from the likes of the NRA. Which of course has been compromised by the media and the likes of Trump saying they will support gun control if he signs it.

Gun control is the one issue that can cost him re-election.

I hope he realizes it and doesn’t do it.

The average person doesn’t think that the second amendment includes crazy people, this the camel’s nose under the tent to background checks-.registration-.confiscation.

Obviously, when one thinks things through, nutcases being able to acquire powerful weapons require, as a preventative measure, someone to define who the crazy p[eople are.

And neither the right trusts the left nor the left trusts the right to define ‘crazy’ (there are more liberal gun owners than anti-gun conservatives ), this is entirely rational.

Thus the conundrum; ‘our’ solution is to have good people with guns everywhere, theirs is to eliminate private gun ownership (albeit piece by piece; few on the left are actually honest about this).

"the president's campaign showed that supporting any gun control measures would pose a problem for him politically "

As long as they know that "posing a problem" is defined by gauruanteed to not be reelected in 2020.

The President has already made a major mistake with the bumpstock ban. It may appear that no serious political fallout occurred due to the ban but I can assure everyone reading this that is not the case. The President has lost a minimum of a half a million votes that helped elect him in 2016 but I believe that number will be much higher. A half a million votes lost in the right places would have elected hillary clinton as president and could just as easily lose the election this time. He turned a half a million people that helped elect him in 2016 into potential felons. Now there is news one person is actually being prosecuted for possession of a bumpstock. A fact that is going to make it all the more clear how serious this ban truly is.

The President has no room for any gun control measure if he wants to be President in 2020.

In fact I actually think at this point the President needs to do something very pro 2nd amendment to help undue some of the damage. The bumpstock ban if not overturned is going to have far reaching political and 2nd amendment consequences.

Oh, believe me, I know we would be the biggest losers if we do lose, but there are enough single issue gun voters to make him lose if he is dumb enough to sign anything like universal background checks or red flag laws.

It’d be another ‘read my lips’ fiasco and a disaster for liberty. Can you imagine the amount of damage any of our current crop of green new deal, open-borders, globalist, constitution-hating, socialist/progressive democrats would inflict upon our formerly free republic?

sending some floaters out to see what the comeback is... if there is no rebuffs, he just might do something .. when i bought one some years ago, the man went somewhere on a computer and came back.. sold me the item..

so there are some backgrounding going on already.. all states do not?

there is NOTHING they can do about the shootings, by taking guns from citizens... and they know that... this is like climate handle.. it’s all for their gain.. they don’t care about people.

I read the shooter that road around shooting. he had a habit of sitting on his roof and shooting dogs and/or at people... the police knew about it.. they had received complaints..and did nothing. he goes out and shoots on the streets and they get on TV and use the phrase : if you see something, go tell the police.. and just what good does that do.

let’s face it.. NO ONE cares any more, and the games for kids are getting more violent. chicago is not a problem to the left either. just losing that power was a hard hit for those who are trying to lie their way back into power

Yes, and any of the Democrats in the running would make Obama seem moderate and Bill Clinton conservative.

Washington must end all “gun control” bullsheit now. That would also have the salutary effects of restoring more trust in government and respect for the law. Illegal “laws” and regulations are anathema to citizen confidence, respect, or support for government

I firmly believe President Trump is our last chance.
He can’t back down from the border or immigration enforcement.
He can’t back gun control.
The Democrat party is essentially the CPUSA now.
The CPUSA doesn’t even bother to run candidates anymore because the Democrats have it covered.
