I am 75 and was taught in grade school NEVER to use the word gender to apply to a person the term gender, which was masculine, feminine or neuter, was understood to apply only to pronouns and anything to the contrary would bring you a low grade and a serious reprimand from the teacher.

I'm an early boomer too; and, I was taught the same things. I also learned that the English language is constantly evolving; unlike (say) French, which has an official body to decide what new words to allow. Look up “gender” in any mainstream dictionary today. You'll find that that it now refers to the social-cultural-psychological constructs I mentioned. That battle was lost over two decades ago. It's really not a big deal. Let the delusional have their 38 flavours of “gender”; and continue to point out that there are only two (biological) sexes. That's the part that matters. Insist on same-sex bathrooms — ignore the “gender” costume parties.
