There's a line in one of William F. Buckley's Blackford Oakes novels that alludes to the McCarthy era; one of McCarthy's charges was that the State Department had been infiltrated by homosexuals.

In the novel, one character says to the other something like "...they're so paranoid over at State, I saw a guy in the cafeteria eating a hot dog like it was corn on the cob!"
