7 ways for conservatives to counter gun control with criminal control
Conservative Review. ^ | September 3, 2019 | Daniel Horowitz ยท

Democrats seek a relentless war on guns by focusing on the relatively small number of people killed in mass shootings, Republicans should have a bold counter-agenda to deal with the vast majority of other homicides in this country – committed with handguns or other objects – who are almost always known career criminals. Senate Republicans should counter the coming gun control agenda with a criminal control agenda.

...

how about dealing with the ultimate avoidable deaths caused by criminal aliens who would never have been in the country if we actually enforced our immigration laws?

Here are seven ideas that Republicans should push to broaden this discussion over safety and security that will actually deter and prevent murders and mayhem in this country.

Increase mandatory sentencing for gun felons: Rather than violate the Constitution and needlessly strip peaceful citizens of the ability to protect themselves, how about we swiftly punish gun felons? The very same people who push gun control are the ones seeking to avoid locking up gun felons at all costs.

...

Actually make the mandatory minimums mandatory: Homicide in this country plummeted by over 60 percent precisely over the same period that gun ownership soared. Why? Thanks to Reagan’s Armed Career Criminal Act (ACCA), we actually deterred violent criminals with stiff mandatory sentencing. Yet for all the hand-wringing over “draconian” mandatory sentences, they were only mandatory from 1987 to 2005. Following the Booker decision of the Supreme Court, they have just been advisory.

...

Fix court loophole allowing violent felons back on the streets:

...

Allow good guys to carry everywhere

...

Declare war on sanctuary cities:

...

inanimate objects don’t kill. Bad people kill. Most of the murders every day in places like Chicago are the result of career criminals not being locked up

Narcissism. It’s encouraged. We are now brought up thinking that any slight disrespect, anything offensive, is an attack on us. We are taught to believe that our feelings are the only ones that matter. Everybody else is dehumanized. They are the “bully”, the “racist”, the “homophobe” etc.

I don’t see laws, sentences, or other legislation fixing cultural narcissism. Even if a background check prevents a gun, he’ll build a bomb. He’ll use a knife. He’ll drive a car through a crowd.

I don’t know how we can get back to instilling in people that they are part of something bigger. That while their feelings matter, they are not the end-all be-all of existence.

The priorities of “God, Family, and Country” have been diminished. It’s more “me, me, and me”.

meaning those who are truly non-violent and didn’t plea-bargain away a weapon, which often happens.

What if they plea bargained because they didn’t HAVE a weapon? Maybe eliminate plea bargains completely and force everything to trial. But taking away a constitutional right for a charge that wasn’t proven to a jury is pretty shaky to me.

Let’s say you (not really you, but some poor schmuck) pick up a drunk friend’s car. You get pulled over and they find a bag of weed and an unlicensed gun. You get charged with both. The prosecution feels like they are on shaky ground for trial so they accept a plea to misdemeanor possession and drop the gun charge.

That person becomes a “violent offender”? The prosecution HAD their chance to take it to trial. They didn’t. Prosecutors shouldn’t get a “win” by default if a charge doesn’t make it to trial.

Maybe it goes to trial and you lose. Now the judge can’t say you were a dumbass who should’ve known better and give you a lighter, but commensurate sentence. Because congress passed a mandatory minimum of 15 years to be served in full before your possession charge starts.

"Increase mandatory sentencing for gun felons"

It was a good idea, but it's already been done. It could also cause a lot of trouble for some law-abiding people in sticky cases of self-defense.

Let's have a discussion about the drug problems. Most of the mass murderers were zombies.

A lot of people here have said things like if they saw a boy hiding in their teen daughter’s closet at 3am, they’d be staring down the barrel of their shotgun. God forbid they end up having to cop a plea. They’ll end up being a “violent offender” who should be separated and locked away for a mandatory minimum amount of time.

Allow Hanging or Firing Squad (inmates choice) and put it on prime time on ALL FCC controlled TV stations so everyone can watch and cheer. We can have Termination celebrations! You have 10 days to make peace with your maker then its lights out.

You make a good point. My experience is that that laziness of most police is only exceeded by the laziness of most lawyers.

Are you suggesting that they all work harder ... and smarter if thatis possible?
