At least 34 people were feared dead after a boat caught fire off Santa Cruz Island, California, early Monday morning, officials have confirmed.
Fox affiliate KTTV earlier confirmed there were nearly three dozen fatalities, but Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr Matthew Kroll told Fox News the 34 people were unaccounted for from a commercial diving ship. The captain of the boat was helping with the rescue. Four other people were rescued. Lt. Cmdr Kroll later confirmed the ship sunk near the north shore of Santa Cruz Island after taking on water.

"The Coast Guard has launched multiple rescue assets along with assets from local agencies to assist more than 30 people in distress on a 75ft boat near Santa Cruz Island," Coast Guard LA said in a tweet shortly before 5 a.m. local time.
A second tweet from the Coast Guard said the vessel was reported as being on fire and that one of those rescued had minor injuries.
Firefighters with the Ventura County Fire Department responded around 3:28 a.m., according to a spokesperson.
The Coast Guard responded with two helicopters, two 45-foot Swift boats and an 87-foot cutter.
Officer Nathan Alldredge of the Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol told Fox News that his office responded to a mutual aid call

Santa Cruz island is the ‘big one’ visible from Santa Barbara for those unfamiliar with the area.
Yeah, either fuel for the engines or propane for the galley.
And they are NOT something anyone wants.
Not looking good for potential survivors at this point.
It may not matter. The deck layout on the boat suggests that the only access to the berthing areas was aft — where the fire seemed to have started. If there was an explosion there then escape may not have been possible. But this is speculation until the crew is debriefed we won’t really know.
CNN reporting the boat sank. Only 20 yard off shore in 60 fsw. Sounds like the Coast Guard may have had it under tow because the initial reports had the boat 20 miles off shore.
from what I understand, the crew were sleeping above deck they were able to get out..everyone else was asleep below deck they probably didn’t have a clue what was happening very sad
That is odd.
Lots of things can make a boat explode, primarily bulge fumes.
All five crew members survived, sounds like all the divers were killed.
Shocking.
Fuel fumes igniting. Propane leaking and settling in the bilge. Lots of stuff can go wrong. There’s a reason why USCG inspections are so stringent.
Prayers for victims families.
I don’t know if anyone has confirmed that the fire started with an explosion. An explosion may have occurred after the fire began.
1. Very sad and I do feel for all friends and family and boat owner.
2. This day and age I suspect foul play by some leftist politico immediately or illegal alien, especially Muslim.
3. I immediately want to know who benefits, e.g., any former Clinton associates on board on manifest?
That is a good question because there has been boat tragedies but it never got a response from numerous politicians unlike this one. Kamala Harris, Ted Lieu, Diane Feinstein tweeted out on this boat tragedy. Perhaps more lives were lost in this incident than others.
In the Navy, I was shown you could drop a cigarette in a gallon of JP5 and it would go out. Confine that same fuel to build vapors and it will ignite/explode. Just like brush fires, it's not always the plant that ignites, but the vapors that build over the summer months. That's why the worst place forest fire-fighters can be is at the bottom of a hill/ravine when the fire comes over the ridge. The fuel vapors are there and will flash fire. I think that is what happened to the Prescott Granite Mountain Hot-Shots in the movie, "Only The Brave". Good movie but heart-breaking - wiped out the entire crew.
Propane
That’s the eventual outcome that I’m afraid.
‘bulge fumes”
Stinky pee pee ?
I can't comprehend how you get our of bed every day.
