HONG KONG (Reuters) - Embattled Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said she has caused "unforgivable havoc" by igniting the political crisis engulfing the city and would quit if she had a choice, according to an audio recording of remarks she made last week to a group of businesspeople.
At the closed-door meeting, Lam told the group that she now has "very limited" room to resolve the crisis because the unrest has become a national security and sovereignty issue for China amid rising tensions with the United States.
"If I have a choice," she said, speaking in English, "the first thing is to quit, having made a deep apology."

She’s trying to turn the protesters against Trump by saying, “He’s the reason I can’t give in to your demand that I quit”
Doesn’t much matter, her choices are to quit or to lose. China will win.
Did she ignite this crisis, or was she merely carrying water for Xi Jinping? Methinks the latter. If Hongkongers are slaughtered by Xi, her name will have a prominent place alongside Vidkun Quisling’s.

She’s trying to placate the masses by saying she really REALLY wants to quit but gosh darn it - she cares too much about Hong Kong to do so.
Anybody with half a brain realizes she’s either lying or she’s signaling China owns her as a puppet leader and won’t let her quit. Either way is bad.

Lam is a Red Chinese puppet. That is painfully obvious.
I’m in the China won’t let her quit camp. She goes, mainland moves to fill the vacuum. And I suspect she’s been told that by a very senior mainland.

If she quits she gets a bullet and she knows it.
Will be interesting to see where she goes for asylum. My money is on Vietnam where she spills her guts and fuels that country’s already deep popular discontent with China. The Chicoms wack her within a month of her departure.
Yep, it is her only way out. There would be no asylum. If the Chinese come in she probably gets it anyway.
My thoughts too - and China pressured her in reaction to what Trump is doing...they underestimated the will of a people who have known comparative FReedom and capitalistic opportunity..
