WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The Latest on the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II (all times local):

Russian President Vladimir Putin wasn’t invited to attend ceremonies for the 80th anniversary of the day World War II started in Poland.
But his Foreign Ministry tried to make sure the Soviet Union’s role in ending the war got acknowledged at least.
The ministry tweeted on Sunday: “One may have varying opinions on Soviet policy during the initial period of World War II, but it is impossible to deny the fact that it was the Soviet Union that routed Nazism, liberated Europe and saved European democracy.”

Yeah, it’s impossible to deny that a lot of Russians died fighting the Nazis — within a few years after the Russians made a treaty with the Germans so the Germans could face the West without having to worry about the eastern front. The Russians were delighted to leave the West for dead - and to get half of Poland into the bargain. They only fought the Nazis because the Nazis, thank God, thought they could fight the east and the west at the same time.
If the Germans had waited to invade Russia until after they’d defeated the West, the Russians would have had only themselves to blame.
They did no-one, including themselves, any favors.
That’s absolutely right. I remember reading in my high school history text book that “the Russians entered WWII to make the world safe for democracy.”

Patton should have been given the reins in april 45 to make a deal with the Wehrmacht (not the SS ) and taken down the Marxist Russians after Hitler’s death. FDR and Truman and probably Marshall we’re soft on communists. Patton’s death was probably murder.

Because Stalin wanted a lot of Russians to die fighting the Nazis, help to reduce the "surplus" population.

While the allied soldiers watched over their shoulders to make certain they weren’t stabbed in the back while progressing against the Nazi’s.
Stalin and his nonaggression pact with Hitler gave Germany the green light to invade Poland. Then after the Polish Army had fully committed to fighting the Germans, the Soviet Union stabbed Poland in the back and invaded. The Soviet Union got what it deserved when Hitler double crossed Stalin . In some ways they share in the responsibility of causing the war.
