I just watched a documentary on Wieluń, the very first city bombed by the Luftwaffe on September 1, 1939.

There was a man who told the story that as a high school student, he befriended a German, who had moved there. The other kids at the school suspected he was a Nazi and hassled him, and eventually he left the school.

Later on, he discovered that his "friend" took part in the bombing of Wieluń.
