This is very true. I've worked in three nursing homes and have seen this, it's heartbreaking. One curious thing though is I've talked with a number of WW2 vets in the places I worked. Most of them couldn't tell you what they had for breakfast but they can tell you down to exact detail what their combat experiences were like. Severe trauma can imprint itself on the brains with clarity.

That is how it was with dad at first. Short term memory loss but great long term memory retention. Then even those long term memories started to get jumbled up and inaccurate. The places, people, time frames, all started to get shuffled to the point none of it makes any sense anymore. But in his mind he is sure it is absolutely accurate word for word.
