In the battle between Sheetz and Wawa for Pennsylvania convenience store supremacy, Wawa just found a new supporter.
Wawa, based in southeastern Pennsylvania and stretching only as far west as Lehigh Valley, was named the best fast food in the Keystone State by Food & Wine.
The magazine wrote about the instate rivalry and acknowledged that Pennsylvanians take their convenience stores very seriously, but ruled, Try the rest Sheetz, Rutters, Turkey Hill, GetGo, were probably missing one or two and then try the best.

Wawa tends to be concentrated in densely populated corridors and is in a class by itself-- there is no real competition to what it is selling.
Sheetz, OTOH, is competiting head-to-head with other great hoagie merchants including GetGo and Speedway and still seems to be holding its own. Wawa is competing mostly against the national chains, none of which, other than Subway, markets hoagies as a cornerstone product.
Let them set up a store in western or even central Pennsylvania and go head to head with Sheetz before drawing a conclusion. You can't claim to be the best if you avoid competition with your major rivals.
The last time I was in a Wawa was back in ‘91. I was in Philadelphia. It was in the middle of the night and I was drunk on Rolling Rock. Me and the guy I was with bought a bunch of Tastykake snacks and went home and pigged out.
On a serious note, I didn’t recall them having any sort of fast food back then - but then again, I was drunk.
If you want a good hoagie or pizza, stop at a Casey’s General store.
WaWa subs are good, the only place my kid found so far with the “add bacon” option on the machine. Never heard of bacon on a chicken parm until he did it.
I don’t think it is actually discernable. Excellence varies slightly between stores of the same chain. It boils down to someone’s opinion. WaWa has been in Harford County MD, for a while; butting heads with Royal Farms, et al. It’s a great big world out there, and anyone can prosper if they pursue perfection. Vince Lombardi said, “We cannot achieve perfection; but we will pursue perfection and catch excellence.
Wawa is gradually putting 7-11 out of business around here. And that’s a good thing.
Their breakfast sandwiches are awesome
My son spent the summer in Delaware, and raved about Wawa. After visiting the one in Orlando, I believe Wawa is a Native-American term for “Quik Trip”.
She is a Sheetz shorter she shorts Sheetz...
I doubt that WaWa will encroach much into Sheetz’ territory here in Western PA. Pittsburghers recoil viscerally to anything that has ties to Philadelphia.
Never ate at such places.
You know it was a bad night when you wake up to find that, in your blacked out state, you bough $50 worth of Schmuffins.
There are gas and fast-food outlets aplenty, and then, there’s Buc-ee’s. True, the Texas legend only has about 40 outlets (and just two outside the Lone Star State), but they’re expanding; a recent media report suggests Buc-ee’s is looking at locations in both Atlanta and Charlotte.
I predict a collision between Buc-ee’s, Sheetz and Wa-Wa somewhere in the Carolinas or Virginia in the next 5-7 years. May the best gas/food joint win. In my area, Wa-Wa is the favorite, but I’ve stopped at plenty of Sheetz locations while traveling in the Mid-Atlantic. I think Wa-wa’s food is a bit better, so given a choice, I will stop at one of their locations. However, both will really have to step up their game to compete with Buc-ee’s.
WAWA IS THE BEST OF THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have been trying to get one closer to us.
Just an FYI.
I can remember when Wawas were worse than 7-11s.
Such an amazing turn around. The company (private) should be studied by the Harvard Business School.
And PS - they treat their employees exceptionally well.
Joe Biden is sad to hear this.
There’s are Wawa’s found as west as Sinking Spring, PA right outside Reading.
My kids think there food is better than Sheetz as well!
You have a weird concept of west if you think northeast of Lancaster is west.
Only the bad and nasty stuff like their sports teams and politicians. We LOVE Philly cheesesteak and Benjamin Franklin.
I think Wawa would compete well with Sheetz. I'm not saying they should open a station/store in Altoona (Sheetz HQ), but maybe Breezewood, Somerset or State College.
I haven't been to Wawa enough to see if they are better than Sheetz or not, but they are both quality, well-run businesses who seem to treat their employees decently.
I do know that if I am away from PA for too long, I get the munchies for a good hoagie.
I never knew convenience store cuisine was such a hot topic.
