I will only digress slightly. I think he was well aware of the fact, that it was fake news, but he put it out there anyway. Now, as you say, for legal reasons, he had to make this non apology apology. 😁
Was thinking the same. Very much reminded me of Rathergate. The gist of this is very much, “I’m saying this because the legal department is breathing down my neck. I’m not saying the story is inaccurate. Heck, it could be accurate. Hell, it probably IS accurate, but we can’t prove it just yet so they’re making me say this stuff.”

The only reason these people appear to apologize is because there is a lawsuit against them. I would not be opposed to hammering these bastards with lawsuits as necessary and keep a tally for later disclosure to the unwashed.
