Two-thirds of Republicans support 'red flag' gun laws: Poll

More than two-thirds of Republican-leaning adults say in a new poll that they support so-called red flag laws that allow family members to petition a court for temporary restrictions on a person's right to own a firearm.

A poll released Tuesday found that 70 percent of Republicans surveyed support such legislation, as do 67 percent of gun owners.

Support for such legislation drops, however, when it is expanded to allow members of law enforcement to petition a court without a family member filing a claim.

In that case, 66 percent of Republicans support allowing police officers to petition a court to take away a citizen's firearms, while 60 percent of gun owners said the same. Nearly 80 percent of Democrats support red flag laws that extend to law enforcement, while 85 percent of Democrats support the basic version of the laws.

In all, 77 percent of the public supports family-initiated orders, while 70 percent back police-initiated ones, according to the poll.

Support for the legislation was polled just before two deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which thrust gun control back into the national spotlight. President Trump reportedly supports the idea of passing red flag legislation at the national level, which Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) vowed to do in a bill with the president's backing earlier this month.

Graham's legislation would create a federal grant program for law enforcement to help states pass their own red flag laws.

“These grants will be given to law enforcement so they can hire and consult with mental health professionals to better determine which cases need to be acted upon. This grant program also requires robust due process and judicial review. It does allow for quick action," Graham said in a statement.

APM Research's survey contacted 1,000 American adults between July 16 and 21. The poll's margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.

One again, no one asked me. Can’t these RINOs see how this can be abused??? Hey, I don’t like Billy Bob so I’ll call in he’s a mental case and then pop some popcorn to see how fast his basement gets raided.

Frankly, our local WalMart would be out of business if it did not allow CCW.

In reality, our school children are less likely to be victims of a school shooting than they might have been twenty years ago. To assure that, every school district ought to allow CCW educators and staff.

Much like Franklin, I still prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

Only people who have given no thought to Red Flag laws and how they have been and can be abused could support them in good faith.

“Red flags” have an inordinate possibility, no, PROBABILITY of being abused.

If, by "PROBABILITY" you mean "ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY", I agree.

The only two Republicans who matter, Trump and McConnell, don't. So any "Red Flag" law will go nowhere fast.

I want to propose a compromise solution to this real problem.

I get it that they want to take our guns away, that restraining orders are too easy to get and too hard to remove (just ask any divorced guy), and that the people behind this are the worst of the worst.

I also, though, in 40 years of medical practice, have occasionally had to evaluate dangerous people who are actively homicidal, and, if you met them the way I have, you would want to make VERY sure they didn’t have access to guns at that time.

And, of course, most people believe that it’s easy to “put them away” when in fact it is almost impossible.

So, the compromise answer is, no “red flag” gun laws, but make commitment to a mental hospital (where they don’t let you take your guns with you) easier.

Do red flag laws risk abuse? Certainly, just like PFA and other things do, but does that mean they are unacceptable?

That is but one of the many, many reasons that they are unacceptable

The only two Republicans who matter, Trump and McConnell, don't. So any "Red Flag" law will go nowhere fast.

Put NOTHING, NOTHING! past these people.

For all the marbles, they would cheerfully have President Trump and McConnell assassinated by 'crazed' (read: 'drugged and programed') gunmen on the same day.

What congress critter would vote for gun rights the very next day when an 1100 page crime and gun violence control law is presented to them?

Pray for Trump. Pray for the USSS. Pray hard.

For a totalitarian state, there are real advantages to lots of crazies and high crime on the street. An inconvenient Seth Rich can be murdered, and it’s just yet another robbery gone bad, one of hundreds, nothing special, move along now.

Oh, and as an extra special bonus, the democrats won't have to defeat Trump in 2020, they might well come to the conclusion that the only way they can seize power is over Trump's dead body. If you're not praying for his safety, start now. I'm an agnostic, I don't pray, I worry, I can't worry him through the next six year all by myself, pray guys, PRAY.

It does not matter how many people a biased survey claims will support an unconstitutional law, it’s still unconstitutional.

I can only guess the wording;....To ensure the safety of woman and children, and for the safety of society in general with the promise your 2nd amendment rights won’t be trampled on without a really, really good reason, and in order to preserve your family’s well being and prevent them from being slaughtered, do you support reasonable and sensible red flag laws to remove firearms from the hands of a maniac family member?

Yes? No?

As opposed to:

Should a massive brutal gorilla of a man be allowed to order the police to disarm his petite wife who just filed for divorce because the was injuring her children?

Yes? No?

You are right. How the Q is worded becomes the issue almost entirely.

So the end of the article tells us that 1000 people were polled, but no mention of how the Q’s were worded.

Utterly piss poor “polling” that got the result they wanted. Not remotely possible. The avenue of legal moves to remove firearms from a relative are quite available already— without the REMOVAL first. A restraining order can be made, if someone is afraid of violence of ANY kind including firearms or knives or baseball bats or automobiles— very specific.

NO legal need to do this and also the red flag so called is UnConstitutional.
