Stanford pushes separate physics course for minority students

Stanford University is pushing a separate physics course for minorities in hopes that it will result in more diversity among physics majors.

A 2016 survey revealed Stanford’s physics department to be one of the “least diverse” departments within the institution, and the university has since embarked on a mission to resolve that supposed concern, according to a university news release.

“Creation of special curricula and support services for ethnic minority groups and women...textbook examples of unequal treatment” Tweet This One step Stanford has taken is promoting a modified version of the standard Mechanics course, a requirement for physics majors, boasting “added support.”

Stanford’s alternate version of this course, Physics 41E, boasts additional class time, as well as “learning assistants,” individuals with a “passion” for “education equity,” who are paid by the university to guide students through the difficult course.

The university says this modified course helps to increase diversity in the field because “students from underrepresented groups often don’t have the same level of preparation from high school as their majority peers.”

I’ve seen too many unqualified engineers rise the ranks.
Their promotion almost always was based on race or sex.

Engineering is too important to be involved in these stupid political games.

Since it appears that all schools minorities attend are bad schools, it begs the question if the teachers are collectively bad at every single minority school or just having minorities makes it bad

A less challenging Intro to Physics class is perfectly ok as long as it is presented clearly and honestly. Such a class, of course, should be open to all students, not just women and minorities. Plenty of white students don't go to academically distinguished prep schools. And at least some students of all races, admitted to Stanford with intentions to study something else, might well need some extra help with physics should they choose to switch majors a year or two later.

Which brings us to the real point, which Stanford is trying to hide: inadequately prepared white students don't get admitted to Stanford. The university is here trying to deal with the mismatch problem created by affirmative action admissions.

One honest option would be for Stanford to forthrightly state that it is lowering its admissions standards in the interests of being more socially and racially inclusive. But Stanford doesn't want to do that. It wants to protect its status as an elite institution. So it tries to hide the ball.

By the way: "inadequately prepared" doesn't mean stupid. There are plenty of students out there who would be out of their depth at Stanford but who would do just fine at UCLA or Wisconsin or Maryland. And some of these, given the opportunity to approach physics (or math or, for that matter, history or philosophy) at a somewhat slower introductory pace may very well catch up by the time they're applying to graduate school. These would be the candidates that Stanford is presumably trying to reach.

It's also racist to say white people can't dance...

Elizabeth Warren dances as well as Michael Jackson.

ANYONE who says she doesn't is a RACIST.

Or maybe a black supremacist... which is the same thing but sounds worse.(And Michael Jackson plans on voting for Elizabeth Warren rather than Biden... based on her great dancing...)

Segregated class with in-room tutors and more class time, so that students who didn't achieve in high school can get remedial schooling away from the general population so they don't feel "shamed" by being less prepared to be in college.

We had a class at Tennessee we called “Football Physics”...The name was actually Basic Structure of the Number System....

Instructor on the first day, said the class was to show how numbers can be used or abused in everyday life...

She rhetorically said, “For instance, was it 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue...Or 1493 he sailed across the sea?”

She started to speak agains, stopped and asked, “Yes, what?”

A guy in the back had his hand up and he said, “Teacher...It was blue!!”

I thought to myself, this is gonna be fun!!!*ROFL*

“Just wait till she becomes a surgeon and you are at the OR.”

I recently had surgery to remove gall bladder. My doc checked ahead to determine which Dr was doing surgery. He said we absolutely must get you in today because the Dr. doing surgery is much more skilled than the alternate who is on next week. I looked at the roster of surgeons and I think you can guess the reason.

Oh I am so in favor of this. Please tell me live testing of Newtonian physics is part of the course work.

The Laws of Physics are written by the mind of God.
Hampering ones learning of Physics to the extent one can comprehend
is... terrible

“Stanford University is pushing a separate physics course for minorities in hopes that it will result in more diversity among physics majors.”

So now we’re supposed to believe segregation is diversity.

Teaching Math In 1860
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for three one dollar gold coins. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is the gold in the coins worth in 1850 dollars, and what would his profit be in today’s gold coin valuation?
