The thing is, how would you separate the two sides physically? Most folks would not want to pull up stakes and move to another part of the country. Logistically I think separation is impossible.

Agree... extremely difficult. Would would require an extreme revision to state boundaries, etc. Many would not be pleased. But the other alternative is probably a very nasty physical fight to determine what separation looks like.
