The Danish royal family was surprised after President Trump scrapped a planned visit to Denmark following comments by the country's prime minister that the idea the U.S. might buy Greenland from them was absurd.
Trump had been expected to visit Denmark on Sept. 2-3 as part of his trip to Europe, but until his tweets Tuesday, there were no solid indications the visit was centered on buying Greenland.
"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksens comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump wrote.
The White House later clarified that the entire trip to Denmark had been scrapped, including a planned meeting with Denmark's Queen Margrethe II.
The cancellation of the visit left the Danish royal family flabbergasted, while other politicians said the snub was deeply insulting.
It [the cancellation] was a surprise -- we have nothing more to say about this case, said Lene Balleby, head of communications for the Danish royal family.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former prime minister, tweeted that Trump's cancellation was deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark, while ex-foreign minister Martin Lidegaard told Danish broadcaster TV2 that the situation was a diplomatic farce and slammed Trump for grotesque behavior.
Total chaos, the former finance minister Kristian Jensen wrote. This has gone from a great opportunity for a strengthened dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis.
Pernille Skipper, the speaker of Parliaments leftist red-green alliance, tweeted that Trump lives on another planet, adding that hes smug and disrespectful.

Any person, who offers, gives, lends or promises to give or lend, or attempts to procure anything of value or any office or employment or any privilege or immunity to, or for, any elector, or to or for any other person, in order to induce any elector to:
Refrain from going to the polls.
Vote or refrain from voting.
Vote or refrain from voting for or against a particular person.
Vote or refrain from voting for or against a particular referendum; or on account of any elector having done any of the above.
Pursuant to 42 USCS § 1973i, whoever knowingly or willfully pays or offers to pay or accepts payment either for registration to vote or for voting will be fined not more than $10,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both. However, this is applicable only to general, special, or primary elections held solely or in part for the purpose of selecting or electing any candidate for the office of President, Vice President, presidential elector, Member of the United States Senate, Member of the United States House of Representatives, Delegate from the District of Columbia, Guam, or the Virgin Islands, or Resident Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
A bribe need not take the form of money; however, it may include items of pecuniary value given in exchange for a vote. While a candidate is free to withdraw his or her candidacy and support another, a candidate may not offer to do so in return for money or other valuable consideration. The provision of the constitution forbidding bribery of electors does not apply to the mere provision of food and drink at any fundraising events.
So the word “absurd” is now insulting and it triggers Trump to cancel a trip. OK.
Why?
That's something a Democrat would say.
Their royal family and the politicians sound really dumb. If they had been paying attention they would know better how to respond.
All they had to do was to says something like: "Yes, Greenland is a wonderful, mineral rich land. It has a great location also. We plan to keep it."
But they didn't. They sound really dumb.
Those dizzy Danes...no sense of humor! They are insulted? JaJa...but it’s OK for them to call Our President all kinds of names.
One of the reasons the U.S. Government overthrew the monarchy, and annexed Hawaii in 1898, was for its strategic military importance. Officials in Washington realized that if the U.S. didn't make the move, the British would take it over, or even possibly Japan, as they had a presence there. It was one of our most important acquisitions of that time. When I heard President Trump was interested in Greenland, I figured his only reason was so it could be used to our advantage militarily.
By the way, Alfred Stedman Hartwell, Bvt. Brigadier General of the 55th Massachusetts Infantry (mass55th screen name), had moved to Hawaii after the Civil War ended. He was an envoy to the U.S. in the lead-up to the actual annexation. General John Schofield had been assigned to the Military Division of the Pacific in the early 1870's, and it was during that time that he was assigned by the Secretary of War, to explore introducing a U.S. military presence there. It was Schofield who advised establishing a U.S. Naval port there. Hartwell and Schofield knew each other from their service in the Civil War. According to Hartwell family history, Alfred Stedman Hartwell, or ASH as he was known, formed a consortium of people to dredge Pearl Harbor.
My brother was in the 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning) which is stationed at Schofield Barracks. He was trained in jungle warfare there before heading to Vietnam in 1966.
I’m 72, and knew you meant Make Greenland Great Again!! I love the idea!!
Lots of dog poop.
How about if we pay the jury to decide a case in our favor? Is that bribery or just payment for goods?
Paying the President of a publicly held company is very different from paying the owner of a privately held company.
NO. The Chinese!
Hah! Me, too, and those little canned hams you get at the dollar store!
Denmark, the Feroe Islands, and Greenland are all included in their NATO membership. I wonder how up to date they are on their contributions.
So Denmark says they don’t have to pay for NATO because they pay for Greenland ($700,000,000) annually. Trump calls their bluff. I’ll buy Greenland. Denmark says no, its not for sale and we still don’t want to pay for NATO. Trump says OK, But I’m not talking to you anymore. I’ll wait tell BrExit happens and I’ll talk to Boris.
Aha! The plot thickens. They cannot outwit our Strategerist-in-Chief.
So THAT's where the Squad have their meetings...
Apples and oranges.
LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget wants to pay $5 million each to the residents of Greenland to get them to vote to leave Denmark to join the USA. ($275 billion of US taxpayer dollars)
It's illegal in the US to do such a thing, but that doesn't seem to bother LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget.
Thanks. I searched the Fox article, and that quote wasn’t in it. If he posted it on Twitter, I don’t have a Twitter account.
Walking around money
Yeah, it’s Twitter.
LOL...I love your analogy. Sounds like Prime Minister Frederiksen needs to be spayed, or given the rabies vaccine...or both.
