For the Left self defense is a much worse crime than assault and battery. Violent people who attack others are considered to be prima facie mentally ill else they would not do such things, therefore they are not responsible for their violence.
Self defense is a rational act. It is engaged in rationally and the defender chooses to commit the violence of Defense and is therefore responsible for harming the mentally handicapped attacker and should be punished. I have heard this argument from highly educated people, one a biology professor at UF.
