I think must of the country is clueless. But they can tell you all about the latest episode of the Batchelor or the NFL preseason.
The eligible voters who choose not vote in presidential elections has dwarfed the turnout of either party for 100+ years. The people who care about politics and culture from both the right and left vastly overestimate the number of folks who care as much they do, at least enough to deign to vote about it. The 24 news cycle and social media probably have a lot to do with that overestimation.
