White privilege exists.
Not in the form all the silly people are on about, but as a sort of legacy of our ancestors.
The fact is that white Europeans effectively conquered the world, between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, between all the European empires. Only a few places escaped the conquest, and even they were in one way or another dominated or culturally influenced profoundly by the rampaging conquerors all around them.
These empires were won by the sword.
Americans are Americans because their ancestors, part of that European explosion, took this continent through conquest. These people created a society that suited them. That they did not have to conform to the local society, becoming white Iroquois say, but to impose their own. That is the non-material spoils of conquest.
To conquer, be more powerful. As for the conquered, as always, vae victis.
The whining comes from people trying to conquer on the cheap, begging against the better nature of their conquerors, and particularly exploiting the cold civil war between white factions. Its both pathetic and dangerous.
The funny part is that people such as this Torres are descendants, both genetically and culturally, of one of these conquering nations. In her true heritage there is more than enough glory.
As Americans are descendants of Britain, Torres is a daughter of Spain. There is no need for that chip on her shoulder, that sense of inferiority.
The American system of education does not teach that however.
We succeeded because we built a superior culture. And because we were fortunate enough to see the richness of this land and exploit it.
There is no "privilege" to it. It is a status purchased with sweat and blood.
That’s what gets me. The Africans, Middle Easterners, Siberians, Chinese, Japanese, and South American natives ALL had the same opportunity to invent technology and sailing ships and set out to conquer the globe. They chose not to do that for a lot of reasons. Why the hell should those who took all the risks, conquered the world, and reaped great rewards be ashamed of their successes?
I wonder how things would have turned out if the African natives had built “Western Civilization” and conquered the world. Would we be yammering today about “Black Privilege”?
It is, nevertheless, not something which each of us achieves individually, or usually not. It is an inheritance which was indeed won by our ancestors through hardship and ferocity.
Don’t discount the ferocity. Europe conquered the world by the sword, in almost all cases against ridiculous odds.
History is very badly taught. Especially world history.
By the end of the 19th century there wasn’t much of the world that wasn’t under the boot of one or another European nation.

Never accept the premise of the enemy’s argument.
The terms “white privilege,” “white nationalism,” and “homophobia” are hand-crafted to manipulate public opinion.
There is an ADVANTAGE to being white, just like there are advantages to being tall, rich, athletic, or any number of things over which we may or may not have any control. Usually such advantages are not universal. In other words, there are different advantages to being other ethnicities, or even advantages that poor people have over the rich, or short people have over tall ones.
Calling an inborn trait a “privilege” is a cynical attempt at appealing to envy, and it dehumanizes the object of the description when used this way. And it is particularly cynical when used to describe someone’s race.
A better way to use “privilege” is in the friendlier context of sayings like, “It would be my privilege to serve you.” Or, when someone thanks someone else, it is often courteous to say, “It was my privilege.”
The anti-racists need education? And you call this news?
Among many peoples, outside the US, there is still a mystique of the white person. I have been the beneficiary of this myself, very often.
In a place with few or no whites a white man is something of a celebrity. He adds a sense of quality to service establishments, and if he wants to be he can be besieged by women. This is a leftover of the ancient reputation of his predecessors in those parts, and the fabled power of his nation. This really does exist.
How long would a teacher last who wanted to talk about the hatred expressed in “knockout game”?

There is nothing more stereotypical that identity groups.
No need to read beyond that.
That’s actually the point that got me intrigued. I was wondering what did she read, where did she get that idea. It was a single NYT article (no surprise there) and she again cited it in response to one commenter. She’s very weak-minded, not the sort that should be teaching children.
