He’s asking to buy the island as an opening position before meeting with their government next week ... including trade discussions.

This is exact reason Trump may be interested in Greenland. Greenland is a hedge against China’s monopoly on the rare earth market. Without those critical materials many of our advanced technologies would not work. In late 2010 China tightened the supply of dysprosium and the price skyrocketed. Dysprosium is critical in the manufacturing of high temperature permanent magnets. They go in everything. Several pounds worth in every car, tons in larger generators.

In the current trade war with China, one of their big weapons is the control of the rare earth market.
