Perhaps a case of Male Munchausen Syndrome. Public attention and sympathy can be intoxicating, thus the public announcement.

A 64 year old man who looks every year of his age. I wonder what kind of life he images for himself in the gay community at this age.
“Mormons produce many gay children...” Well, they produce many children. Are they disproportionately gay?
Society has always had homos, and you know, I don’t really care. But please, don’t ask me to say it is the same as nature’s order. And don’t ask me to say that it is OK to leave your marriage and family of many decades to indulge your own sexual desires.
I can’t imagine how the kidnapping of my daughter would have affected me as a husband and a father. And then, upon her return, to learn what her perverse hell kidnappers had put her through, physically and emotionally. I think I surely would have gone at least temporarily insane.
Perhaps the need for so long to remain strong for his wife and family postponed that day of reckoning, and an emotional breakdown and mental illness finally caught up with Mr. Smart.
I don’t mean to characterize homosexuality as a mental illness, per se, but the fact that Mr. Smart felt it necessary to make “news” with what could (and I think SHOULD) have remained a private family matter suggests there is a lot more going on here than is any of our damn business. Mr. Smart clearly is a very tortured soul. I pray he will seek and find the clinical help he so clearly needs before he becomes irretrievably lost.
The strongest, most compassionate and ADULT family member in this whole sad affair remains Elizabeth Smart herself. She hardly needed to have this burden added to those with which she already must live for the rest of her life. I wish her all the best.

OMG, you are right! I think it was in "With Charity Toward None: A Fond Look at Misanthropy" (but I'm not sure. It's been years.) She was a great writer... I've read everything she's ever written (well -ahem- everything she's written under her own name.)
Now we get to hear the pukes in the media talk about how courageous he is.
