Photos from a recent Strait of Hormuz transit by the US Navy amphibious assault ship USS Boxer showed an 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit light armored vehicle parked on the flight deck, a sign that this warship was expecting trouble in the hostile waterway.
The Boxer was harassed by Iranian drones in the Strait of Hormuz last month, and the US says the warship downed one, if not two, of them. Another potential threat in this region is Iranian gunboats, which have targeted commercial shipping in recent months.
Last fall, Marines with the 31st MEU embarked aboard the USS Wasp for an exercise with an LAV on the flight deck for the first time in the South China Sea, experimenting with options to boost the combat capability of the large amphibious ships against threats such as fast gunboats.
US Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer recently sailed through the Strait of Hormuz with an armored vehicle strapped to the flight deck, ready to fight off drones and Iranian gunboats.
A light armored vehicle belonging to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit can be seen on the flight deck as an AH-1Z Viper lifts off in a recently released Marine Corps photo, NPR's Phil Ewing first noted.
The Marine Corps LAV-25 has a high-end targeting system that directs its 25 mm chain guns and M240 7.62 mm machine gun. The Boxer is armed with counter-air missiles, as well as various close-in weapon systems, among other weapons. The Vipers carry two air-to-air missiles, rocket pods, a handful of air-to-surface missiles, and a 20 mm Gatling cannon.

Brilliant.
I thought the old armor guys would get a kick out of this one.
Treadhead ping.

Hopefully the armored vehicle doesn’t use a ‘touchscreen’ for control of it.
But if it does, I wouldn’t be surprised.
You can bet, however they do it, it works.
Take that to the bank.
Not for our navy ships...if you’ve seen the recent articles on how they’re about to get rid of that touchscreen crap.
THEY BLEW IT, at least on that.
Oddly, there was no mention of the US Navy in the article. Only USMC.
I saw that silly report.
One would have to be both silly and a pussy, a silly pussy if you will, to write something so weak. Like a lawyer trying to convince a jury that their client was too stupid to know that gasoline will easily ignite, therefore the warning label was not big enough on the can.
I don’t believe USN leadership would allow such a cost, and reduction in capability because somebody’s defense lawyer made such a silly assertion.
It was a “report” with “recommendations”.
If the Navy had any sense, this would be embarrassing. Modern warships are stripped of guns of all calibers lately. And they have no escorts?
Embarrassing that they are so undergunned
I want one.
Every prepper needs at least one.
Deal. I get the USS Boxer though.
“Modern warships are stripped of guns of all calibers lately. And they have no escorts?”
Only supply and amphibs have a shortage of guns for close combat, and carriers.
These DDGs and CGs have plenty of firepower and do not need escort anywhere, at any time. They go where they want (as long as the entire bridge is not asleep lol).
They ARE the friggin’ escort.

From the article. Not recent but still effective.
“I want one. “
I’ll see your drone and raise you an ass whoopin.
A couple of those big amphibs would clear the strait.
Whenever it please them. And with impunity.
Grandson of the Huey Cobra?
Check out this one deck out in hell’s own fire...
There was a crudely written sign posted for the VC during the Vietnam war: Don’t shoot at the skinny helicopters.
The Army and Navy Have a Plan to Fire Ground Artillery from Navy Ships
I suppose every new navy ship could be one of a couple sizes of blank unconfigured boat with a flat deck. For example, you could build something that looks like a stripped aircraft carrier and have little shelf decks hanging off the sides. Then with the armor one has stored inside, different configurations would be created by driving different things out on to the shelves. Today its an aircraft carrier festooned with AA and tomorrow its covered in different artillery and rocket systems to create a type of battleship.
Im not saying its a good idea, Im just saying it looks like someone else has that idea too.
On my bucket list.
