Photos showing off the inside of a Russian nuclear submarine, the largest in active service in the world, have been released, with the huge ship being the inspiration behind the sub from the classic Sean Connery movie The Hunt for Red October.
Images show crew members working on the Typhoon-class sub, also known as an Akula, a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine belonging to the Russian Navy.
The sub appears to be the Dmitriy Donskoi, which entered into active service in 1982 and, after the decommissioning and scrapping of its Typhoon sister boats, became the largest submarine in the world.
The Dmitriy Donskoi joined the Russian Northern Fleets anti-submarine warfare drills in July, shortly before the new photos were released.

“We will pass through the American patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll... while we conduct missile drills.”

No, I think Typhoons are boomers and Akulas are attack boats.
That is going to cause some confusion because the NATO designation for a class of Russian SSNs is Akula. Typhoon is the NATO designation, Akula is the Russian Navy name. The Russians call the NATO named Akula the Shchuka. Akula is Russian for shark, and Shchuka is Russian for pike.
See my post right below yours.
Typhoon is the NATO class designation
Akula is the Russian class name for the same SSBN.
Never never go on a boat that can sink itself. Never.
Not so sure about that.

The picture on that site sure doesn’t look like the sub in the article, imo.
Is this the one that has a swimming pool? IIRC, it was more like a big hot tub.
“drills in July”
Just cover for the salvage trip to Epstein island.
Exactly.
You arrogant ass, you killed us all. <— Akula
One ping only. <— Red October imaginary boomer
Correction. Alpha = attack boat in RO.
Akula is the NATO name for them. Soviets were different.
Named after a hockey player?
Typhoon was the NATO name for them. Akula is what the Soviets called the submarine class. To keep things confusing the Soviets gave the name Akula to the lead boat of their Shchuka-B series of fast attack boats so NATO adopted that term for the entire class.
One of the documentaries on the Kursk showed a sauna and a swimming pool for the submariners.
That boat was some four, maybe six stories high, iirc.
I would not like to be on a 37 year old submarine!!!!
