She is wrong.

My ancestors had to be disease free, have a certain amount of money with them, and show they had gainful employment set up. And have a place to stay, in our case, with relatives.

It was my parents who had to be sure they had sponsors.

Uncle John sponsored my mom and her sisters, he had a home and they lived in a tiny appartment in the attic.

My grandfather came here at 16 years old with his younger sibling when both their parents died within 24 hours of each other. They still had to have a sponsor. Thank goodness my aunt sponsored them and my grandfather started working at Hudson Motor Car Company in Detroit and became a supervisor. He worked to help support his siblings until they were all 18.
