The ONLY reason to stay on the bench at that age is to exact a political agenda.

He was a civil libertarian in the good sense. We would be fortunate to have more judges like he was. The problem we have is that the ones who get promoted are often promoted because they can be counted on to rule a certain was. Think John Robert’s.
