Not only is the U.S. Postal Service delivering less mail it is now delivering fewer packages Opens a New Window. after it warned Congress Opens a New Window. it could run out of cash in the not so distant future.
In the agencys latest quarterly statement, it reported a net loss of nearly $2.3 billion as it delivered 3.2 percent fewer packages.
Revenue from packages, however, increased due to higher prices.
But the decline in package volume the first decrease in nearly a decade could spell even more trouble for the financially-stricken agency, as its courier competitors ramp up delivery efforts to compete with the likes of Amazon. Packages were also one area of concentration for the Postal Service as it worked on a reform plan to shore up its finances.

How do you square the Constitutional requirement for the Post Office and the fact that it would be out of business if it was fully privatized?
Post office needs to go to a Monday-Wednesday-Friday delivery model with premium fare for delivery on other days. Plus it needs to stop sleeping with Amazon.
Go to OPEN THE BOOKS and check to see what your local Post Office is paying their custodians.
How many businesses would pay a custodian more than $50,000 per year plus give them a ‘Cadillac’ benefits plan?
Here are some examples from Pennsylvania where a custodian gets $57,987 salary and their benefit package is on top of that.

We got a USPS priority mail pkg with tracking number and delivery cinformation delivered to our home a few weeks ago. The pkg as NOT addressed to us. We also got a neighbor’s mail in with it.
This is not a one-off in our neck of the woods.
Cry me a river.
Prices have doubled in the last decade or so, because some bean-counter obviously felt that the way to get more profit is to jack up the prices (never considering that once you do that people are going to buy less and send less).
Not delivering massive amounts of junk mail would help.
More often than not, the mailbox is jammed with useless junk mail.
Unexpected.
Stop subsidizing multi trillion dollar companies like amazon.
For non corporates, the prices have increased dramatically. They are still cheaper than everyone else though.
I think it should be privatized. It is now a cash cow for the govt. No more free service for anyone. A sensible retirement mandate. Let the marketplace set salaries.
Go back and read the Constitution. A post office is NOT mandated. Congress is granted power to do so and could abolish it or completely privatize operations if it wished to do so.
I’m no greenie but out of idle curiosity I recently took at look at the USPS site.
Sure enough, they have a stock standard page about their commitment and dedication to the environment blah blah etc etc.
This, of course, is laughable when you consider the staggering volume of junk mail ie that which is unwanted by all and usually immediately tossed away. Making matters worse, the junk is typically full color heavy coated cardstock which lots of dyes and chemicals involved in producing the paper/ads.
Not only are they toting literal tons of landfill-clogging junk every day, it’s basically a vector for pollutants well beyond the paper itself.
The dirty little secret, of course, is the junk is the only thing keeping the lights on and gas in the tanks of the mail trucks. But that doesn’t make it right nor does it justify their hypocrisy.
LoL
How’s about we make a ‘Postmaster’ salary less than 100k?
It is insane to pay those lazy slobs that much for doing pretty much nothing. They set at a desk and talk on their phone or play games. There is a worker to to do all sorting etc.
Every lil Podunk village has a ‘Postmaster’ making that much or more, change it to 50K and the problem is solved!
That, and the USPS is also delivering packages from China for free.
Trump was supposed to fix this problem, but it hasn't happened yet. You can still buy items for a dollar on eBay with free shipping from China. Grrrrr.
If the custodian was also a handyman and could do basic repairs it would be a fair salary. However I doubt that is what happens with government janitors.
They can shut it down as far as I am concerned. I used maybe 3 stamps in the past 5 years. Everything can be done online or electronically. UPS and FedEx for the rest.
“USPS MAY ‘FRANCHISE’ YOUR MAILBOX, SELLING ACCESS TO PRIVATE COMPANIES Opens a New Window.”
Can I get Pizza Hut to deliver a pie to my mailbox? It would open up more advertising avenues for The Hut...
“NOW! Try our new Mailbox-Shaped pizzas in your favorite style...Supreme, Meat-Lovers, BBQ Chicken!! Order a liter of Coke and a giant Chocolate Chip cookie...get free delivery!”
“Everything” is a start. Even a recent grad of Efficiency 101 could go into any post office and immediately see dozens of examples of antiquated waste. Too many delivery days. Too many idle employees. Too few customers. Freebies, like, boxes, for the taking. For example.
At this point, Amazon can afford to run their own shipping service.
They should not be getting any special deals using taxpayer dollars.
