The Census Bureau is hiring and officials plan to employ more than 500,000 part-time and temporary workers across the country.
Between Westmoreland and Allegheny counties, officials expect to field about 12,000 applications, census spokesperson Susan Licate said.
The hiring needs within each county vary and are ongoing, she said. For example, to properly staff Westmoreland County, we estimate reviewing nearly 3,000 applications so as to identify the right candidates for the positions. Allegheny County, 9,000 applications. According to the census website, workers in Westmoreland County will make $16 per hour, while Allegheny County workers will make $18.50. Available positions include field services, census takers and clerical work.
But census officials are preparing for fewer applications . . .

For example, in one of the initial training sessions, the trainer failed to show and my sis suggested that they could conduct the training without them simply by going over clear written instructions.
She said the reaction from the crowd was worse than if she'd suggested they all strip naked and go out and dance in the street.
When I was a pup, the census bureau would approach leading citizen, churches and community organizations and ask them to submit the names of members who were responsible and might use a little extra income sort of like our county does now to recruit election workers.
Apparently, the census wants a different demographic now.
Can I wear my MAGA hat and ICE jacket to work???
I applied last time around and was assigned shall we say a very undesirable neighborhood - dangerous, drug infested, and no place for a white man even in broad daylight. I said “no thanks”
i live in a blue state- i will not be filling out the census as i want to screw this state...
I guess this thread needs a positive census story—so here is mine.
Many years ago I worked for the Census Bureau as a summer job. They sent me around the area to check local census maps to see if they were correct.
One of the towns I visited was _way_ out in the country and almost _nobody_ lived there. I had never been there before, never had a reason to visit.
I _loved_ the place.
Everybody was friendly, everybody has lots of land...so great...
and you know how this story ends many years later, right?
Yup, I live there now. :-)
P.S. Nothing has changed—still a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, and the people are still great.
I’ll be returning my form with ZERO listed in the household.
I’ll starve Colorado of census count so they may lose seats in Congress and electoral votes.
I hope everyone joins me in the Blue states in doing this.
Anyone who has ever researched their family history will tell you one thing, the U.S. Census is a joke. It has always been a joke.
I always say life is like a sweater thread. You start pulling on it and you never know where it will end up.
I worked during the 1980 Census.
According to the Inflation Calculator, my pay was slightly over $20/hour in 2019 dollars.
From memory, we had 4 hours of training for two days in a row, so I made a $160 just sitting in a classroom.
Does that sound like a government job to you!
In the previous census, white males were not hired unless there was nobody else. The census bureau can pound sand.
Ward said board officials often encourage young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 to take census positions.
Census officials are incorporating strategies aimed at social media, partnerships with local organizations, public service announcements and recruitment booths at public events to help fill available positions by February.
we better get involved.
Census officials prepare for low number of applications ahead of 2020 survey.
Fear not they will show up on election ballots.D
Same here. Nothing but a bunch of lazy low IQs. I was hired as a field worker but in week 2 I phoned in asking to be a supervisor and POOF! wish was immediately granted. The next week, I quit. Too much incompetence.
Yep. They lied just as much 150 years ago as we do now. Those who didn’t lie, went years not showing up on the census.
Because anyone older than that isn’t stupid enough to go into certain neighbors asking personal questions.
I'm an amateur genealogist myself and find them useful for establish date and place of household. Beyond that, it is a question of if the census taker actually took their job seriously or was just after government money.
I agree. I’ve looked over so many that I know that the information was given to the census taker by someone other than a family member. I’ve come across quite a few like that.
In many cases, but in some cases, I think the census taker was just a lazy jagoff.
