I think the last 20 years the Media Matters octopus has actually facilitated the weaponization of the mass media. It has always been leftist but not nearly as weaponized even in the 70s in the manner it is today and that is Media Matters and all of its tendrils.
Consolidated under 6 major corporations, hence the descriptor “Corporate Controlled News Media”.

In 2008-2009 the financial collapse caused media companies to lose clients who were closing down. These major media companies went to Congress with their hands out (literally) for a “bailout”. Everyone was in line for a bailout.
The failing media was positioned to be consolidated under corporate control, lefty corporations. And today we have its fake news model. They no longer rely on advertisements and subscriptions as they did previously. They are paid by lefty corporations and the writers and editors will churn out narratives the new owners want.
It’s a takeover pure and simple.
Historically, the media has been going the way of the buggy whip with the advent of decentralized news streaming on the internet.
But the major tech monopolies who answer to the same people are geared up to recentralize the news business model under their platforms through influencing algorithms, censorship, suppression of alternate sources, promotion of approved narrative sources.
