Nearly 50,000 Protest for Free Elections in Moscow

Nearly 50,000 Russian opposition activists and their supporters have taken to Moscow’s streets for a fifth consecutive weekend in spite of a government crackdown as support from citizens and celebrities grows across the county.

The protests, which demand that Moscow authorities allow independent candidates to appear on the ballot in the city’s upcoming elections, have been the largest wave of demonstrations in Russia since 2011-2012. Independent polling this week said that Moscow residents are more likely to support the protests than oppose them.

Moscow police have detained more than 2,300 people at rallies this summer protesting the candidates' exclusion. While most of those detained were quickly released, authorities accused protesters of using violence against the police.

Investigators opened criminal proceedings against several people over what they have called mass civil unrest, an offense punishable with up to eight years in jail.

On Friday, senators in Russia’s upper-house Federation Council said they will draft a bill to further restrict the locations where citizens will be allowed to protest.

Yes, about half of arrested are foreigners or not Moscow residents. Freeper billakay posted a video of one such arrest involving an Antifa guy who had a 9mm pistol on him.

"Putin is basically a product of this system but you have to admit that he is much more tolerant towards political opposition"

Lol

Thousands of people, including students, were arrested at previous protests

See post #22. In 1993 Yeltsin just gunned down about 1300 people attending similar protests. Then brought the tanks and shelled the congress so they couldn’t impeach it.
I am yet to see Putin doing any of that but Yeltsin considered a model Russian leader by the Western MSM and academics. ‘A flawless democrat’ as Bill Clinton puts it.

Do you consider France a freer country? How many are now dead among Yellow Vests? And thousands wounded.

Putins thugs were arresting opposition leaders. Opposition politician, Lyubov Sobol, an ally of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, was detained by police ahead of the protest.

Opposition politician, Lyubov Sobol was in her office when masked police conducted raid.

Navalny is an obvious CIA operative and Sobol is his associate.
Nothing good is coming out of it. That is why ambassador Huntsman is packing bags and coming back to Utah.

Yeah will probably take awhile for genuine opposition leaders to emerge. Of high caliber. Ukraine lucked out with Zelensky.

I don’t believe you are that gullible. Zelensky is a result of a total moral bankruptcy of the Ukrainian elites. I’d say quite a sorry result.
