The Portland Herald Press reports that pro-life activists are mobilizing in an effort to collect 63,067 valid signatures of Maine in order to prevent two controversial laws which legalize doctor-assisted suicide as well as require private insurers and taxpayer-funded Medicaid to pay for abortions from taking effect in September.
Carroll Conley, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, told the paper that for the past two weeks the group has been working with Catholic and evangelical leaders around the state in order to obtain the signatures before and after masses and services.
According to the paper, "the Christian Civic League has petition coordinators in most of Maines 16 counties and appears to be running one of the best-organized of the 12 petition drives currently underway."

Pro-life opponents of the bill missed a deadline to force a referendum this November on the two laws but could stop them from going into place if the aforementioned signatures are obtained by September 18. Then, "the veto questions would appear on the ballot during the next statewide election, which because of a new primary law passed this year will be on March 3."
Organizers are telling signature gatherers to not be vicious towards people coming out of church and to remember to be polite. "If God wants us to win, we are going to win anyway, so dont harass people, Mike McClellan told volunteers at a training session Thursday night. McLellan is a former Maine state representative who now works for the Auburn the Christian Civic League.
Supporters of taxpayer-funded abortion say it will help poor women obtain the procedure. Proponents of doctor-assisted suicide argue it is a morally acceptable practice.
At the time the doctor-assisted suicide laws were signed by Gov. Janet Mills, Matter Vallier, the executive director of the Patients Rights Action Fund, issued a statement, saying, "The legislature and Governor Janet Mills failed the people of Maine. Assisted suicide is a dangerous public policy that puts the most vulnerable people in society at risk for abuse, coercion and mistakes."
"It also provides profit-driven insurance companies perverse incentives to offer a quick death, rather than costly continuing quality care," Vallier continued. "Mainers, especially the terminally ill, people with disabilities, and the poor, deserve better."
The signature effort is also backed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
LOL! What a wanker the writer is.

Too bad they missed the first deadline. Hope they can reach their goal.
didn’t maine go liberal in last election?
What? To people coming out of synagogues, mosques and hare kishka temples you should be vicious?
If you’re asking about the 2018 election, yes, there was a blue wave in some areas of the country, and Maine was one of them.
Our great governor, Paul LePage, the most conservative governor in the country, could not run for a consecutive third term....he was term limited out. GOP businessman Shawn Moody ran against 70 something Janet Mills, Maine’s liberal democrat attorney general. She won by 8 points.
The Maine House was already democrat controlled, but they added to their numbers.
The Maine Senate was controlled by the GOP, but the dems gained control of that chamber.
That’s how this abortion bill / doctor assisted suicide got passed in the first place.
A number of anti-gun bills were proposed, but they were defeated by pro-Second Amendment patriots.
Former governor Paul LePage has said he will run again in 2022. He can have a third, even fourth term, but they can’t be consecutive to the second term, which is why he didn’t run for re-election in 2018.
P.S.: Maine’s Second Congressional District covers 80% of Maine....27,000 square miles, the largest in area east of the Mississippi. Donald J. Trump won this district by 10 points in 2016, and received one electoral vote as a result.
The Hildabeast won the more liberal First Congressional District, for one electoral vote, and narrowly won the statewide popular vote by 2.9%, for two more electoral votes.
Well I hope the great state of Maine doesn’t slide into liberal land and will regain it’ strong republican base again- Hate to see it leaning liberal now- but I’m afraid folks from cities are movign htere in droves
Fortunately, not all the people moving here from blue states are liberal.
I’ve met a number of people who moved here to Maine from Massachusetts and they are all conservative (the ones I met).
The First CD....the Portland area, 20% of the state of Maine....that’s the most liberal part of the state, and the most heavily populated. Lots of illegal, “refugees”, etc.
I’ve heard people in northern Maine call the Portland area “North Massachusetts.”
[[Ive heard people in northern Maine call the Portland area North Massachusetts.]]
Yup- From portland south was always called “North Mass” when we were there- most of the boston folks we would run into were liberals through and through- the suburbs of Mass though can be quite conservative still, but i think those folks migrate to more northern [arts of Maine, as southern maine is pretty congested in summertime, and they wanna avoid that i think- southern maine, along the coast, has loads of homosexuals unfortunately- so loads of liberals- when you move inland though- you begin running into the real Mainers- Used to be even the coast had the ‘real Mainers’ with the lobster fishermen- tun fishermen- etc- but even that is getting taken over by libs now- You can still find some of the old timers there though- at the coves- Sure miss the accent-
Somehow I doubt that really happened.
But I have no doubt that the RATs "voted early and often" to achieve that result.
(the ends justify the means)
Doncha know.
well i meant their governing body mostly liberal- not th state- although a bunch of libs do seem to be moving there- at least in southern maine-
And I meant to imply that they stole the election. After all, they did “legally” steal the CD2 seat from Poliquin with “rank choice” voting.
