Will Guatemala's Sunday Elections Change Things?

In theory, the winner of Guatemala’s Aug. 11 elections will have the power to tackle the serious problems that make the Central American country the primary source of the thousands of migrants showing up at the U.S. southern border each week.

Many voters in Guatemala are looking for solutions to the lack of jobs, high rates of violence and food scarcity that drove so many of their fellow citizens to leave the country in 2018. (Some 116,000 Guatemalans were apprehended last year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol—a quarter of total apprehensions.)

Another major voter concern, according to a July Gallup poll, is the endemic corruption that cripples the state’s ability to channel resources toward fixing those problems.

My wife is from Guatemala. She has been talking with her mother still there. People are scared of fraud and violence breaking out.

Torres was married to former president Alvaro Colom who was arrested on corruption charges and awaiting trial. Torres divorced Colom to run for the presidency in 2011.

Gee, I wonder who will win? The guy that says he’s going to put the smack down on folks or the chick that is going to give everything for free.

Here’s a thought. Have the US Dept of State meet with both candidates. Advise them that there are US companies that are willing to build factories, train workers and help establish safe places to live, as long as there’s a commitment from the government that it will help with immigration mess. But, all the money and all transactions will be carefully monitored and accounted for.

Lets see which one of them has a problem with that deal. The first one that does is the true crook and I’m betting it would be the chick.

She sounds like an even bigger scheming self-promoter than Hillary.
