Why does the United States refuse to pass new gun control laws? It’s the question that people around the world keep asking.
According to Dr Jonathan Metzl, a psychiatrist and sociologist at Vanderbilt University, white supremacy is the key to understanding America’s gun debate. In his new book, Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America’s Heartland, Metzl argues that the intensity and polarization of the US gun debate makes much more sense when understood in the context of whiteness and white privilege.
White Americans’ attempt to defend their status in the racial hierarchy by opposing issues like gun control, healthcare expansion or public school funding ends up injuring themselves, as well as hurting people of color, Metzl argues.
The majority of America’s gun death victims are white men, and most of them die from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. In all, gun suicide claims the lives of 25,000 Americans each year.
White Americans are “dying for a cause”, he writes, even if their form of death is often “slow, excruciating, and invisible”.
Metzl spoke to the Guardian about his analysis this March, and again this week, following what appeared to be a white nationalist terror attack on Latino families doing back-to-school shopping at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, that left 22 people dead. Maybe because up to now, the majority of politicians realize that more laws will not solve anything, least of all gun control laws.
I'm not so sure that's the case any more.

Most mass shootings in the US are committed by blacks. Remove maybe 7 majority black US cities from the stats, and the US drops to about number 189 on the list of world cities by number of murders. This is the elephant in the living room that people won’t mention. Violent crime in the US is disproportionately at the hands of young black males, not white guys.

And I’d like to see all the white liberals attempt to disarm the minorities in the inner cities (but the cops remain armed). That’ll go over well.

Seriously, he makes all kinds of assertions without any supporting evidence and zero logic behind them. Oh, and starting off with incorrect facts doesn't help either. 25,000 suicides by firearm in the US per year? Nope, a Harvard study puts the number at 19,000 and change.
That's bad but restricting firearms is not going significantly change that number. There are basically two types of people who commit (or attempt) suicide: those that really want to end it all, and those for whom the attempt is a last ditch cry for help. People know sticking a gun in their mouth or putting one to their head is almost certainly going to kill them. Those poor souls are not in the "cry for help" group. If they are that serious about ending it, they are going to find the means. Those 19K or so will find a way. Infringing upon our rights won't help them.
Sick, sick people.
The vast majority of blacks are killed by other blacks.
And blacks kill more whites than whites kill blacks.
Yet this racism?
The right to Life includes the right to self-defense and the means of self-defense - firearms.
Gun control is about making Elites, Politicians, and government bureaucrats safer, not about making private citizens safer.
