DEA Agents Are Losing Their Own Weapons And Have Trouble Tracking Them, Report Says
The Daily Caller ^ | August 08, 2019 | JAKE DIMA

The DEA was audited by the DOJ inspector general in a report released Thursday, detailing numerous instances of mishandling weapons and ammunition.

DEA Agents lost 26 of their own firearms from 2014 to 2018, and their means of tracking them down is flawed.

DEA facilities also routinely mishandled ammunition and non-lethal devices.

Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agents are reportedly losing their own weapons, and their system for tracking them down is obsolete, a Department of Justice (DOJ) audit of 16 locations released Thursday reveals.

...

The 26 firearms, both carbines and handguns, were stolen or lost in 24 different instances, and only 17 of the 24 agents who parted ways with their government-issued weapon were actually penalized for the loss. DEA penalties varied from 5-day suspensions all the way up to 35-day forced leaves.

One agent lost his handgun while hunting, another left their weapon in a restaurant and a third left one in a hotel. Only 12 of the 26 lost guns have been recovered, meaning 14 are still unaccounted for.

...

DEA agents do “not track data on whether any of the lost or stolen firearms were used in a crime.” And even if tracking them down was a priority for the government organization, it would be extremely arduous.

There is no central database that holds information about the weapons possessed by DEA agents.

...

DE-17s also have little ability to make edits as to which officer possesses which firearm, and information is reportedly deleted and mishandled frequently. If a firearm needs to be tracked, it must be done manually.

...

The DEA has another problem: they aren’t following their own policies. They’re issuing their agents more firearms than needed, despite losing more than a few of them throughout the years.

Oh yeah, I bet they’re ‘losing’ them.

Check their bank accounts, both on and offshore.

They’re also also “losing” the drugs they seized.

Secrecy breed corruption. That’s the major problem with federal police.

“Carbines”? Would those be the kind where the little lever has one more position than mine?

President Trump needs to sign an executive order which bars any federal agent who has lost a gun from having one on the job anymore.

Or put it in the red flag bill

Any LEO who loses their weapon must be summarily fired.

Raise your hand if you can imagine ever leaving your gun anywhere. 😬

When the DOJ can’t determine week to week what drugs are legal or if state law supersedes federal law. When there is no rule of law, it’s pretty hard to expect officers to worry about departmental regulations.

I do note that all this antiquated record keeping would not have prevented the loss of a single weapon. Does regulating the compliant for the sake of appearing hard on criminals sound familiar?

24 agents over five years. 17 of those get penalized.

So, seven agents in five years lose their weapons in ways that are understandable and forgiveable.

There are about 5 thousand DEA agents that carry guns every day.

People are fallible.

The world is imperfect.

There is a lot of randomness in the universe.

Let him who is without sin throw the first stone.

Getting all emotional about losing track of a piece of firearm fuels the idea that firearms are toxic and should be treated like plutonium or ebola virus.

There are over 400 million firearms in the United States in private hands.

Another five or another 25 from a few government agents will not make a difference.

Yes, appropriate discipline should be done. If the agent lost government property through negligence, they should pay for it.

Requiring the agent to pay for the firearm, and putting a letter in his personal file is more than enough.

“piece of firearm” should have been “firearm”

Mostly they are probably losing a lot money seized in drug raids.

Anymore if you were to lose an unspent round on the street it would quickly be surrounded with police tape

Except for the weapons, I don’t think that they are losing anything. The drugs they seized are going up their noses and in their arms. The money they seized is going to hookers and bars. And they probably have a general idea of where the weapons went.

The lost drugs are being sent to middlemen for resale. I doubt low levels are doing this, but it stands to reason that destroying product worth millions would be antithetical to a secret and corrupt federal government that is 21T (not counting missing money) in debt.

I was in a Jack in the Box and a UPS driver came in, then went into the bathroom. When he came out, I asked him if he ever left that little tablet computer tracker he has in a bathroom - thinking of the cops that had been publicized leaving their guns in restrooms.

He looked rather horrified and scoffed, said, “No. Never.” I guess the UPS guys are more careful with their company property than the cops are with the gov’t issued weapons.

Last time I looked, that UPS hand held computer wouldn’t kill you if someone found it in the restroom.

In all the years I carried a hand held radio, I can’t remember EVER leaving it in the can. ROFL
