Documents indicate that the National Rifle Association planned to purchase a luxury mansion in the Dallas area last year for the use of chief executive Wayne LaPierre, according to two people familiar with the records.
The discussions about the roughly $6 million purchase, which was not completed, are now under scrutiny by New York investigators. The transaction was slated to be made through a corporate entity that received a wire of tens of thousands of dollars from the NRA in 2018, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.
The New York attorney generals office is now examining the plan for an NRA-financed mansion as part of its ongoing investigation into the gun lobbys tax-exempt status, in which it has subpoenaed the groups financial records, the people said.
A spokesperson for New York Attorney General Letitia James declined to comment.
The origins of the idea to buy the mansion, its proposed purpose and the reason the deal never went through are now being fiercely disputed by the NRA and its longtime ad firm, Ackerman McQueen, which are locked in a bitter legal fight.
Allies of Ackerman McQueen, which was involved in the discussions, said top officials there were alarmed by the proposal. But NRA officials said that the real estate purchase was suggested in early 2018 by Ackerman McQueen as an investment that would be led by the ad firms top executives and that it was ultimately rejected by top NRA leaders.

Money is a powerful agent of moral corruption. And the NRA has been swimming in a sea of $$ for decades.
Will wait for the details, but my general opinion is that if you are defending a basic right that the left is intent upon taking from us, make sure your actions are above reproach.
This reminds me. I’ve never seen a pic of Rev. Wrights’ digs which HIS congregation purchased for him right smack dab in the midst of an all-white neighborhood. Perhaps the Washing Compost can come up with that.
I think that is a good position. Unfortunately this seems to lend credence to what Col. North was trying to raise the alarm over, before he got pushed out.
Total housecleaning is in order before the whole deal goes down the tubes.
Settle the suits as quickly as possible and move on to reform and restructuring.
Hire an outside firm to go over/audit everything without interference.
Cut the board membership way down.
No long term appointments.
This is a total abuse of the membership’s trust.
If we have been reduced to “well Rev. Wright did it too...” then we are in deep trouble.
Olly didn’t just jump the shark; he humped the shark.
Money has gone to Wayne’s head.
That’s all the NRA is to him now, a cash cow.
I’m a GOA life-time member.
The Iron Law of Bureaucracy seems firmly in place at the NRA.

This is yet another example of why all offices - public and private - should have term limits.
A huge leap from the days when the NRA was on set during filmmaking to ensure firearm safety and their logo was on films during credits.
I noticed it during a W.C. Fields movie, though I can’t recall which one.
“this seems to lend credence to what Col. North was trying to raise the alarm over, before he got pushed out.”
Yep.
Everything the left touches it destroys. The intact family. Objective news reporting. Immigration. History. Colleges. Boy Scouts.
The NRA is next.
I agree. The libs have been claiming for years that the NRA is nothing but a money-making racket. There’s nothing stupider than going out and proving that they’re right.
Yep, there’s nothing worse than seeing an organization with such a good mission turn into a racket. The Wounded Warrior Project comes to mind. Please don’t let the NRA turn into that. It was a bad sign when Oliver North sounded the alarm and got forced out. They’ve gotta turn this around yesterday, admit to the shenanigans, and lay down a real and rational plan to get back on track.
Current NRA leadership need to all leave, bring in a good heavyweight to restructure the organization, throw these idiots under the bus and get NRA back to its core mission and roots. A shame that they have ruined the organization, even if temporary.
LaPierre is starting to remind me of Mugabe, former president of Zimbabwe. Both appear to be willing to use their power to maintain a luxurious lifestyle, even when the money could be more wisely distributed through the organization. Both APPEAR to have an attitude of entitlement. Plus an unwillingness to negotiate.
