“.... nut cases to have easy access to guns ....”

Maybe we should remove nut cases from society like we used to! No we don’t have to chain them to walls, treat them with leeches, electroshock or cold water, etc. We treat them with whatever therapy modern drugs are available. We don’t just automatically let them unsupervised (after the age of 18!) into society where they pinky swear that they show up for therapy & take their drugs.

None of the proposals regarding background checks would have prevented this! Soccer moms what a zero error system which is impossible but the desire for that level of perfection will be leveraged to end the 2nd Amendment. Mark my words!

Who gets to decide who the nut cases are? One persons nut case may be another persons patriot...

I may need to re-listen to the President, but I don’t remember him saying anything about new background checks per-se. He mentioned the red flag laws, but I don’t consider those in quite the same category. I agree that none of the background checks I’m aware of would have prevented either of these shootings (since none of the shooters had been arrested for crimes limiting their access to guns). To be clear...I think the conversation and brainstorming solutions needs to revolve around the CULTURE OF VIOLENCE (which fuels the MENTAL HEALTH issues at play here). That is the real issue that is being ignored. Our President did a great thing when he mentioned it’s not the gun, but the person pulling the trigger.....

“We treat them with whatever therapy modern drugs are available.”

And there is the rub. Many of those drugs can lead to behavioral problems. Yes they work wonders for many people but I have to ask whether in a certain subset of the population (males of a certain age) they do more harm than not. And even among that population (young men on certain medication) I think it would be very difficult to determine who is likely to take fascination with guns and violent imagery and turn to mass murder.

Another issue that nobody seems willing to mention is how the loss of the stabilizing, civilizing presence that women used to provide to men has been lost for a great many young males. Combine that with absent fathers and you have quite a few young men who have no clue how to get out of adolescence and into adulthood.
