Hong Kong Protesters Build Barricades, Block Streets, Cross-Harbour Tunnel

BEIJING (Sputnik) Protesters built on Saturday barricades on the streets of Hong Kong, thus blocking traffic in the city, including in the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, which connects Hong Kong with mainland China, local police said.
"Some protesters blocked the entrances of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, causing serious obstruction to the traffic. Some other protesters have removed railings from roads and set barricades at various junctions of Nathan Road, seriously obstructing traffic. Their behaviours have already paralyzed the traffic and seriously affected emergency services", police said in a statement.
Police called on the protesters to stop blocking traffic and respect the rights of other people.
"Other members of the public should avoid traveling to the area and stay tuned to the latest situation", the statement stressed.
Mass protests in Hong Kong started in June as a reaction to new amendments to extradition laws that, if passed, would allow people to be extradited to Taiwan, Macao and mainland China.
The Hong Kong government eventually relented, suspending the amendments, but the protesters remain intransigent and demand the complete abandonment of the initiative.
Tienamen Square II coming.
This is not going to end well.
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.
Sorry to have to tell them this is just as futile and tragically useless a human sacrifice as the Major (Sir Alec Guiness) in the Bridge On the River Kwai. Saw it recently.
Silicon Valley cramming Anne Frank onto the train.
Time to start thinking ahead. What should the US response be if the People’s Liberation Army goes in and does Tiananmen Square II?
What should the US response be if the Peoples Liberation Army goes in and does Tiananmen Square II?
China did sign a treaty(?) with UK guaranteeing Hong Kong autonomy for 50 years. It’s only been 22 years, but Red China seems to want to show Hong Kong that they are really in charge and there is nothing the Hong Kongese can do about it.
If there is another slaughter, I doubt it can be swept under the rug as neatly as Tiananmen Square I was. China back then was still under very tight control. Now with cell phones etc. “signal will get out”.
China will claim this is all an internal affair and foreigners can butt out. There is little the outside world can do, except maybe doing business with Red China. We may be getting ready to live in “interesting times”.

I have a bad feeling that Hong Kong is about to ‘go hot’

give Taiwan intermediate range nuclear missiles?
British sources put the 1989 death toll in Tiananmen Square at 10,000.
Many brave young men and women were crushed by tanks and their remains literally washed down the drain. It was disgusting.
Uh they blew up the bridge over River Kwai and we won the war.
Thanks for spoiling the ending for me. ;)
I keep thinking that when you see crowds in HK with Republic of China flags, that things will get really interesting. Even more so if ROC flags appear in Mainland China itself. When I saw the Russian tricolor appearing in the USSR during its last days, I was amazed.
A few points. Apparently the “interesting times” quote is not of Chinese origin.
HK may get crushed but it is not Tiananmen Square. China might just metastasize a lot of internal dissatisfaction. HK is a major world city and trade point. Harder to control and will set China back further in international relations.
“Abraham Lincoln, in order too maintain the unity of the United States resorted to the use of force.
So, I think Abraham Lincoln, President, is a model, is an example.”
Spoken by Chinese Premier Zhu Rongii, about Taiwan, at a news conference with President Clinton, 8 April 1999.
Ready to cite that example again?
