Witness reports talk about “pops” and that people didn’t know what they were at first. Have not seen reports of machine gun style firing, for whatever that may be worth.

No, not at all! My comment was to the point that without close inspection ARs and AK’s can be either semi or full. To the average citizen, rapid fire may seem like full auto, because they’ve never seen an M16 empty a 20 round mag in a matter of a few seconds.
